They produce some cracking talent, have a great scouting network - not surprising given their owners ofcourse
It’s arguably his dream job so I’m happy for him. Should do well there and if he does there’s always chance he could be moved on to RB Leipzig.
Great job for him. Only Leipzig left on the Red Bull train now then. That might be a step too far but I wish him well at Salzburg.
Good luck to him. Always have happy memories of that great escape in 2020 when he was in charge. A great boost in the dark early days of Covid.
Can't thank him enough for fantastic memories of Fulham away, Forest at home and Brentford away but the following season we were going down with a whimper until Val came in and got us firing.
Why had nothing been learned though from the amazing 'lucky' escape season ?. Things looked and felt worse than ever again, at the start of the following season, and Val had to clear up the mess.
Almost as if Salzburg want to fail by putting him in charge… Seriously though, he galvanised a group of young lads and kept them in the second tier. People give Ritzmaier a hard time but he was crucial to how Struber played, knew the system and sacrificed being popular for doing the job Struber wanted.
I'd like to defend Struber by saying that Ritzmaier was the equivalent of Cloughie's JohnMcGovern - nobody knew why he played him but he was always just there. But I can't. Struber had us playing clever passing football which lacked a killer touch because we didn't have a decent enough attack to finish things off. But nevertheless his points per game that season were sufficient to give us chance to escape. And that escape was the best night my living room has ever had.
I’m not old enough to remember Cloughie’s team, but I reckon it probably was something similar. In a way he did the Zinchenko role and moved from left back into defensive midfield and back again to change the defensive 5 to a 4 and back again. I know I’m in the minority with my opinion, but while he may not have been the best player to ever grace Oakwell, once he got up to the pace of the English game, I thought he was effective. Sollbauer was similar, although he got up to speed quicker.
Struber was in charge for only 4 matches that season. Admittedly, we took only one point from them, but you can't really draw any conclusions about what the course of the season may have looked like, if he'd stayed.
That's true I suppose, but it kind of looked and felt like nailed on relegation I'm afraid, even at that early stage. Is it true that Struber annoyed the owners a bit, by running his mouth about no financial support and no ambition etc ?. And he's totally right if he did say that!. I bet they were glad to see the back of him.
