It was solid that away end that day… record crowd… they thought they’d won the World Cup ending our 21 game unbeaten run.. we had last laugh going up though… proper football days
Remember it well. We lost to Boro a week later and we all thought the wheels had come off. Walking back towards Leeds Road after (I was 15), a gang of Town 'firm' ran towards us from behind. Thought we were in for a shoe-ing but they were after a white minibus full of Reds; one lobbed a brick at the window which missed my ear by about an inch. I still remember the sound now!! Great pics @dearnevalleyviper
Thanks for posting those brilliant photos, mate. I remember that day well. Also, the doomsayers at the time were quick to start shouting "They don't want to go up", before they conveniently disappeared from view a couple of months later when we were promoted.
We was in home end ,massive Kop at one side of pitch ,standing, was swaying about that many in there, had to politely clap there goal, couldn’t believe we lost, thought we was invincible, was a bit scary in that home end, there was 5 of us ,was sure people knew we was reds,my mate got his glasses knocked off in their goal celebration, got smashed he was convinced it was done on purpose
Went with my mate, who had family living in Kirkburton. One of them came with us. We were stood on their big side stand, right at the back. I had my red and white scarf on, I remember me being very quiet all game but can’t remember anything else.
I remember the wanton brutality of West (?) Yorkshire police. Big crowd trying to get into the away end. One lad, who had already got inside, managed to (somehow) climb up the wall to shout to his friends. Immediately two mounted police came and started beating him with thier batons. Completely over the top. Shame we didn't set a new record, but that incident is my main memory of the day....
Great photos, remember it well. Shame our long run came to end there. I worked in Huddersfield at the time so got loads of stick from their fans. Had the last laugh though when we beat them to promotion. I went back there with a mate one Friday night to watch them play Millwall and they lost 1-0. Think we had Exeter at home (someone might correct me) the following day. We beat them to go in front and never looked back. Happy days, thanks for posting.
That was my dad's stock phrase whenever we lost. I remember him saying it a time or two in 96/97 including walking to Oakwell to the Bradford game. My dad's glass was definitely half empty.
