In addition to the Huddersfield game, I also saw us beat Charlton 7-1 in the Second Division in the 58-59 season, a season at the end of which we were relegated. Malcolm Graham scored 4 goals in that match. Incidentally, in the same season we lost 7-4 at home to Bristol City, with Lol Chappell scoring all 4 of our goals.
6-0 at half time and Hignett missed a penalty just after. I always said that if he’d tucked that away to keep the momentum going we’d have got 10 that night.
I’ve just mentioned this game on another thread. Nigel Adkins was in goal for Wigan that day. I seem to remember Mick Clarke hitting the crossbar after the 9th too. Were you at Anfield for the 9-0 against Palace. That was a bizarre game. 8 different goal scorers, with only Steve Nicol getting 2. Aldridge being brought off the bench to take a penalty in his farewell game (which I thought was against the rules at the time?), Geoff Thomas missing a penalty for Palace and Aldridge causing a crush in the Kop when he started throwing his kit to the fans at the end. Funniest thing about that game though, was that they kept the Palace fans behind at the end. When all the Liverpool fans had left the stadium, the Palace fans started singing “you’re not singing any more’ at the empty Kop!
I know its often used as an over exaggeration figure, but I firmly believe we should have got 10 that night against Hudds. When you think about it, Hignett and Ward were in the same team for the only time. And it slowly went downhill for Hendrie after that. I've known us concede 7 a few times as well, away at ManUre and twice at blooming West Brom!!.
What memories. That Darren Barnard goal and Hignet’s debut. If I remember correctly, Hignet signed for us from Middlesbrough because he was John Hendrie’s mate. I always thought it was a shame that Hendrie’s move into management never worked out .
I'm sure Hendrie had something to do with it but I read that the main reason he wanted to return south was to be closer to his kids. I also read just this week that Joe Royle, Manchester City manager at the time, said that he'd bid for him but couldn't match our bid of £800,000. How times change!
I forgot about the Man Utd one. So yes, I was there for all 3 of those. So we need another 7 goal haul to make it 3 of each for me. If I remember right, the first 7-0 at WBA was the game that saw the end of Allan Clarke's second spell. Or was it the first game after he had gone?
Yeah it was in Nov '89 under Winstanley, the week after we'd sacked Clarke. And we were wearing the starry kit then lol.
Hey speaking of Clarkie and the dreaded 7, didn't we lose 7-0 at Reading (Elm park) in season '79, which forced Allan to hang up his playing boots.
Yes, although I can't claim to have witnessed that one, so my list is still 3. That was a few months before I started going. But I vividly remember being at my auntie's house in Doncaster watching the scores come in on the vidiprinter, and my uncle guffaw'ing when the score came through with the 7 shown as 7 (SEVEN). I was 9 Sure you are right - it was Clarke's last game as a player.
Yes , you’re right. I knew he was a long term player with Middlesbrough, but I’d forgotten about him joining Aberdeen before us.
It’s silly looking back now but my main memory of the Huddersfield game was thinking at 0-0 and 1-0 that we were going to regret all these chances we were missing. 20 minutes later it was 6-0!!!
I watched us win 16-0 at Oakwell against a foreign side, 70's or 80's. Anyone on here remember that or was there? Pre season friendly I think.
And then a couple of years later we got revenge over Brizzle with a 7-3 win, which I attended as a kid in one of my earliest games.
We signed him from Aberdeen didn't we? Hence why he was so far from his kids and wanted a move back down south.
