Take a look at Vales https://www.onevalefan.co.uk/forum/topic/59082-barnsley-a-match-thread-sat-aug-5th/page/10/#comments To say they were not happy is an understatement. Interestingly they are a bit divided on us. Some think we are world beaters and certs for Automatic and their battles are against lesser clubs and some think we are nothing special and it’s just they were terrible. I loved one that said it was as if it was a FIFA 2022 game but the vale players were in slow motion
I didn’t think there was too much between the two teams apart from their defending was appalling and we were clinical which is obviously quite important
The to them it was one of those days when everything went in. They probably had a similar amount of chances butq, bar that one good save by Roberts , their efforts were weak.I I've seen heads drop way worse when the scoreline was less, I thought they had a good spirit about them. Didn't rate their goalie though!
If you look at the match stats we were fairly evenly matched except in the goals column. 2-0 at half time was really unfair. But no excuse for them giving up 2nd half Be interesting to see how they bounce back I remember our great escape season is conceding 6 against Charlton when everything they did went in. But we bounced back next game Apparently their Keeper saved the most shots on L1 last season. Not sure what happened yesterday but in all fairness there wasn’t much he could have done about most of the goals. Maybe Cole’s Hattrick goal he could have done better with and possibly the 7th but the rest were hardly his fault
To be fair it wasn't so much that they gave up. We came out like a freight train in the second half and steamrollered them. Overall they looked decent on the ball but poor in the final third at both ends. If they play like that all season they'll struggle to stay up. Small sample size obviously
The best chance they had was when Roberts saved their offside effort. Apart from that he had the simple enough save to make that he tipped towards the east stand. I never felt like Vale would score event when they were on top.
Spoke a lot of sense. There was very little Ripley could have done with any of them. I am surprised he wasn't asked about their penalty appeal when they were adamant there was a shove.
I don't think they were far off the mark. We were clinical and they were awful defensively. But they were on top for 15 minutes at the start and the game was quite closely matched other than the important stuff of scoring / conceding goals. I think they are right that, despite the goals, we weren't outstanding. I thought we were decent with loads of positives in relation to new players and the shape of the team. But we can improve on that performance. If we can, and do, on a regular basis, the PV fans who said we were automatic promotion candidates will be bang on.
Their marking at the back and general defensive awareness of the runs of our players was poor. They were either caught wrong side or just weren't aware that a player was running into the box unmarked.
I hear they aren't happy that Crosby didn't say 'sorry' to them for that performance/result. But in fairness, the boss doesn't tell a team to play like that does he. So shouldn't the players themselves be apologising to the fans!.
The big difference was the final passing and shooting, they maybe had 1 or 2 “good chances”. Rest were lame shots from distance or half chances, we carved out several great chances and buried them all. I think they’ll be fine, it was refreshing to see a L1 team with so much attacking intent early on, rather than a Park the bus mentality. Nos 7 looked a really good player, their defending was suspect but once we got into the game we were just too good for them simple as that.
Bit of a tranmere away. We lost 6-1 When every shot they had went in. Even their manager at the time (King) said We were the better side throughout the 90 minutes. Biggest injustice of a scorline I've ever seen. I don't say that of port vale yesterday. But they dominated up to the first goal.
Did Aldridge get a hat trick for them that night, in the 6-1 defeat ?. I remember something similar for us 2 seasons before that as well, when Swindon won promotion. They had Glenn Hoddle and John Gorman as the management team, so they were obviously a good footballing team. But we totally outplayed them there and lost (it was only 1-0), and Gorman said he'd never seen anybody come there to the County ground, and outplay them like we did!.
