There's a lot of talk about Kitching's value. A players value is usually based on their
1: contract length. 2: age. 3: how many other similar players are available, and 4: the financial position of his current club.

I'd argue that unusually, all these factors are currently in Barnsley's favour.
Left footed CB's are highly sought so IF we sell, it should be for a figure more in our favour.
But i do worry the club has a reputation within football that its a good place to go pick up a bargain - something that has to change if we are to progress

Brighton are selling Caciedo for £110m
It's hard to argue that he is actually worth that amount as a player, but even though he's wanted to leave, Brighton played hard ball because he was on a long contract and there aren't many similar players out there.
It's at a different level but the same principles apply. Barnsley don't need to sell right now.

If we don't need to sell we should have a rough figure in mind and bring in his replacement then sell on our terms.

Coventry are about to sell Hamer for 15m, having sold Gyokeres for 20m so we know they have money still to spend.

The Curse of the Disclosed Fee!!

Coventry getting a further £15million for Hamer, so we must hold out for as much as possible! £8million with add ons sounds realistic to me.

    When players are being sold for £15-20-25million as standard by Championship clubs now, it shows the huge importance for us of two things;

    1. Getting into the Championship and stabilising there.

    2. Getting sizeable fees from these cash rich Championship clubs when they come in for our players.

I wonder how Millwall, Preston etc. afford to pay Championship wages. I think we'd have done ok in the Championship this season, if we'd gone up.

According to a recent Price of Football podcast, Milwall have racked up £126m in last 11 years, covered by their owners. Preston owners have wrote off £78m debt.
In the 2021/2022season, Championship clubs lost an average of £440,000 per week - equivalent to about 22m a year. Eye watering figures.

We have a player who is under a 4 year contract is club captain is starting to show talent and application that was missing before he arrived at Oakwell. Coventry want him we should be screwing them for every penny possible or simply telling them to do one. For the club to progress they simply have to start getting top top money for players when the contract length is as long as kitchings. We don't need to sell he's an important member of the squad in a position that's already seen departures it needs to be stupid money to even consider a sale as his value is on the rise.

I admire your optimism and hope it's not misplaced but the events of the last
year fews years have brought me to this opinion ans I say this as a season ticket holder of many years.

We need to stand firm on this one and not be frightened of taking the p*** out of other clubs for once, the perception of us being pushovers won't change unless we change it.
Young, eye for a goal, versatile as has played at LWB, club captain so shows leadership, long contract, if we value and entertain bids on anything less than £5m we've only got ourselves to blame.

He's an integral part of the back line. Eye for a pass out and a goal too. If promotion would bring in the £6 million extra that's often quoted (I've no idea if it's true or not) then that would be my starting point. So, if Coventry came a'courting, I'd be wanting what they got for Hamer. Of course, 65 continuous years of watching the revolving door at Barnsley lead me to think that ten bob, a blackie's egg and a bag of nuts will do.

Fifteen million quid. For Liam Kitching. I swear this forum is an experiment in testing the boundaries of Poe's law.

To be fair I think this set of board members are taking a tougher stance. They didn't give in with Styles when he wanted out nobody met their valuation so compromise was to sign a new contract and go out on loan. If the reports on the Mads fee are correct then that's decent money for a player in the last year of his contract. Everything in this situation is in our favour we know they've got money and the length of his contract. I hope he stays but if he doesn't he shouldn't be allowed to leave unless we get top dollar and a adequate replacement is in place.

I might be wrong here but I’m not sure they’re saying he’s necessarily worth that, just take the plss and ask for that.

I’d say he’s worth more to us than anything Coventry would be willing to pay. I don’t think anyone would go above £5 million for him but given he’s our captain, leader, best defender, still young and has ages on his contract, I’d say he’s worth more than £5 million to us.

That's my take on it. £5 million and we'd probably have to at least consider it tbf. He's still reasonably unproven at second tier level, although that doesn't mean he won't cope there.

If he does go they won’t tell us how much just that it was a good offer.
