The total contract was quoted for £1.5bn in the papers. According to Private Eye, it would cost the same to send 500 asylum seekers on a Disney Cruise for a year as it would be to house them in this boat.

Sorry, I meant how much they paid for the boats that didn’t even dock.

Your suggestion is completely logical and sensible, the only flaw I can see in that is finding rented accommodation. Typically when a property is advertised for rent, a queue of people turn up and start a bidding war for the property. The sudden influx of asylum seekers in the market would simply make things worse.

If only we had some sort of public housing say owned by some sort of local elected body, maybe a council and rented out at an affordable rate.

    Oh.

Exactly this. As a compassionate person I really fail to understand some peoples thinking. It is very depressing

It is depressing. We are all human beings but the Tories use issues like this to divide, to pit people against each other, to generate hatred, jealousy and distrust. It serves them well when the 'little people' get distracted by issues like this. Sadly, it does work. Enough people do react in the way required for things like this to gain traction. So much so that what I mentioned above - we are all human beings - gets lost. 'Our most basic common link is that we all inhabit the same planet. We all breathe the same air'. Tories would spin it otherwise.

    Anyone surprised?

They weren’t going to do anything about it, were they?

Well, yes. The destruction of council housing... I have a lot to say about that. But even working within the market forces we have, which are far from ideal, there is a workable solution. The current Tory strategy is disgusting, no matter where you ally yourself on the political spectrum. What's happening needs to stop and we all revaluate.

Someone will be along in a minute to say it had legionella in the water when they were on it in the Falkland’s or up in Scotland and that it was fine for them then so why not for these now…

It’s an absolute disgrace, they were still on there this afternoon after they’d broken the news on bbc, so to know they knew about it on Wednesday and still had them on there - wow. Words fail me.

But they’ll get away with it.

We are a plague on the face of the earth. Maybe those biblical predictions of the end of days have some truth in them. Except it won't be a malevolent god that will be the cause, it will be ourselves and the natural world....

Still happens. Remember a pair of miserable ***** after the Bolton game (I'd legged it for the last train back) going on and on about Devante Cole. You can probably fill in the rest yourselves, I'm not repeating anything here.

Was absolutely chuffed for him when he got that hat trick last week.
