How was the performance of Anthony Backhouse? Despite the result, Saturdays ref went straight in at number 1. Despite the result, the Port Vale ref remains bottom. 1) Carl Brook 5.98 2) Thomas Kirk 3.82 3) David Rock 2.81
Would have been a 7 but he loses a point cos he's been promoted to SG2 (Championship) and I have a healthy dislike of so-called "Special Group" officials. Nothing to do with Wembley you understand.
He did ok, bizarrely waved play on for them to attack after what looked like a clear foul on Russell first half. Not too bad 7/10 again
I thought he was pretty decent. Who the hell has given him a 0? - seriously! That's taking the piss. If we are not going to do this properly there's no point doing it at all. Perhaps when collating the scores, we ought to work out the median not the mean average, so stupid outliers like that are effectively ignored.
I agree, people really ought to give what they really believe and not just be Tommy opposite similar to those that give a 10, especially with the previous 2. I’ve given last night’s ref a 6, thought he generally did ok, but missed and/or didn’t give some blatant fouls.
I didn't like how lenient he was at their snail pace walking to take a corner. Nowt against him personally for that but you have to wonder where the consistency is.
My issue is that I believe people are mistaking not having many decisions to make with not making many wrong decisions. The truth is that when he did have big decisions to make he got them criminally wrong. The foul that he waved away which drew loud boos was one of the worst decisions I've seen in many a year and there were some absolutely blatant shoves in the back which he just completely ignored too. In a game which had few fouls he managed to get the few that there were wrong. In fact wasn't he treated to a round of 'youre not fit to referee' at one point?
He did get a chorus of you’re not fit to referee - but I’ll judge him based on what I saw over 90 minutes with my own eyes, not the short term judgement of a minority in the ponty end who probably overlap quite strongly with those that still insist on singing the Leeds IRA song - which was heard again briefly on Tuesday, surprisingly not followed by a tannoy announcement. You’re mistaking him not making decisions and not blowing his whistle. The fact he wasn’t constantly stopping play doesn’t mean he wasn’t making decisions. I thought he was ok. I mean they’re all a bit crap at this level - the premier league refs hardly cover themselves in glory a lot of the time, never mind at this level - but I’ve seen much worse and I don’t mind the odd poor decision as long as he’s not blatantly biased and is at least consistent. They are reffing at the level we are at for a reason and if you’re a poor enough team to find yourself in league one then you get league one referees. The refs are probably much closer to premier league level than most of the players are. I thought he let them get on with the game without interference Tuesday, once or twice not giving fouls I thought were obvious, but you can’t have everything. He scored 7/10 from me on that basis. Not perfect, but within the realistic expectations, actually pretty fair. There were dozens of things for us to be worried about and complain about Tuesday night but the ref on this occasion wasn’t one of them. And as for ‘one of the worst decisions in many a year’- come on. I thought it was a foul on Russell. But it isn’t even the worst decision this year never mind many a year, Russell is hardly a beacon of imposing strength you need to wrestle off the ball. I agree he got it wrong and should have awarded a free kick, but one of the worst decisions in many a year? If that’s the worst decision against us we get this season we are in for some good bloody luck.
Same whinges after every match! It gets like a pantomime, with the referees the pantomime villains. This must really endear us to the PGMOL, or whoever oversees League One officials.
