There are. Adding to the allure of the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23 is the innovative Medal Plaza, where the medal ceremonies will take place before the sessions each day. This is the first time that the athletes are celebrated outside of the stadium. The Medal Plaza also serves as a vibrant hub of entertainment.8 Aug 2023 Well done Katerina Johnson Thompson btw. Brilliant Gold.
Thanks - it makes sense to have the Ceremonies the following day - rather than stop things within the stadium for the ceremony. - Budapest is a brilliant city and it looks as if there is a lot of interest in these Championships with the stadium being full from the first day.
I think the false starts yesterday maybe came into it. Amazing to get on the medal rostrum at last for Hughes though!
She did great. Really pleased for her. Not been easy for her with injuries and being seen as the heir apparent to Jessica Ennis Hill.
She did brilliantly and so pleased for her well deserved The Medals thing is strange someone seems to appear and just plonk the medals on the athletes as they are lying on the track exhausted which I never saw before - Though if there is a proper ceremony the next day thats a good thing Pleased for Hughes as well - fine margins 0.001 second from silver 0.002 seconds from no medal at all
a mathematical challenge for you MEN'S 100 Metre Final 1. Lyles 9.83 2. Letsile 9.881 3. HUGHES 9.882. 4. Oblique 9.885. So in micro/inches/millimetres or cigarette paper or whatever how far ahead of Hughes was Letsile and how far ahead of Oblique was Hughes. Are we reaching a stage where athletes have reached the peak and they simply can't run any faster? GB and NI like many countries sent very small teams to the World Championships - top performances times/distances etc for each event studied and if assessed that athletes had little or no chance of medalling they weren't selected.
No 100% accurate as sprinters tend to run very fast then slow down after about 6-7 seconds, but... Lyles - 100m in 9.83 = Avg speed 10.1729m/s Letsile - 100 in 9.881 = Avg speed 10.1204m/s Hughes - 100 in 9.882 = Avg speed 10.1194m/s Oblique - 100 in 9.885 = Avg speed 10.1163m/s When Lyles was finishing, Letsile had run 9.83s x 10.1204m/s = 99.48m. So 52 cm between first and second. When Letsile was finishing, Hughes had run 9.881 x 10.1194m/s = 99.989m. So 11mm between second and third When Hughes finished, Oblique had run 9.9882 x 10.1163m/s = 99.969m. So 31mm between 3rd and 4th.
Scoff wow! can't challenge your maths! the photographic system must be absolutely perfect and have no errors. Is it the crossing of the runner's chest at the finishing line that is recorded? (something to be said for wearing thick running vests to race in.) Think I'm right that in swimming competitions they don't go further than hundreds of seconds and if two swimmers are level they are dead-heated.
Probably not far out but I suspect they are going faster than the average speed as thats timed from a standing start you arent going to be too far out though so 1cm and 3cm approx over the medals- personally I would vote for if the difference is less than 0.01 they should be dead heated as I dont know if the tolerance in the equipment setup is really good enough to be sure at 0.001 seconds especially if there are several lanes between the athletes
