I think some people are just wired up wrong - in a strictly biological sense. Others are a product of a horrible upbringing and environment. Then there's a mix of the two. BBC spoke to her high school friend who found it hard to believe it was the same person she knew. Her parents must be crushed.
It's true that the threat of more years on top of a life sentence isn't a deterrent for anyone and won't stop anyone from failing to attend court. So instead make it so that any convict failing to attend court to hear the sentencing will be punished by 42 days of solitary confinement. Anyone laughing or smirking or otherwise behaving in a way the judge feels is mocking to the victim shall get the same punishment. They'll soon start turning up if they know that failing to do so will give them 42 days of hell
So many lives ruined here. The little babies, the parents. Some of the team at the hospital will be feeling pressure and stress now. And, dare I say it Letby has also ruined her own life. Stories like this would be unbelievable if they weren't true. I hope no film company is going to do a prog/film about this soon as that would compound things for the families and staff.
I was reading the other day a post from someone whose partner lived with her at University - and was shocked by what came out in the trial. Sometimes you can see that someone is on a path towards a crime, and sometimes its a complete surprise.
Sorry, but all this is utterly pointless. I feel for the families & the pain they have felt. This has been a ten month case & I respect all the jurors sticking with it & delivering a verdict, in what was a very complicated case. Someone so ****** up as the defendant is not going to be bothered TBH. A whole life sentence to reflect on that & no doubt, watching yourself against other violent inmates won't make for a happy life. Better than a death sentence in my book. I think the judge was bang on, in terms of what he could do. A great post earlier about why forcing someone to come to court explained it all. They will just make is about them, when it is about the victims. BTW, if I was that piece of ****, solitary confinement would be a reward.
Can see your point having read some of what the victims said in court though I think they would have wanted her there for sentencing. Baby E and F's mother described Letby as a "coward" for failing to attend the sentencing hearing, adding: "Our world was shattered when we encountered evil disguised as a caring nurse." "We have attended court day in and day out, yet she decides she has had enough, and stays in her cell - just one final act of wickedness from a coward,"
I'm not so sure. If she was 'evil' (read: psychopath) then she really wouldn't care what they said. In fact she'd probably enjoy the attention and infamy. Her life up until the seemed pretty normal, no instances of crime etc. looks to me like it's something that developed over time. The BBC printed some of her comments she'd written down just before her arrest, and there seemed to be a realisation of what she'd done and where it was heading, whilst also some denial. On our nursing courses (and in the university at large) the amount of mental health issues is chronic. Some really very ill people who either struggle through, take leave and return, sometimes several times, or just don't come back. Of course being mentally ill doesn't make you child killer, but now the nursing students pay fees the university and school goes above and beyond to get students to complete the programme (£££). It does make me think that on a basic level were filling hospitals with staff who simply will be absent from work and at worst, well who knows. I can guarantee the uni will have had all her training records requested to see if there were any flags that were missed at the time.

Didn't Ian Brady actually request solitary? Might be misremembering it being him, but I'm pretty sure that it has been known to happen. I suppose I get the desire to see people face up to their crimes, but I think we have to accept that these are, by definition, not well-adjusted people who play by the generally accepted rules of society. By the time that you've done things bad enough to warrant a whole life sentence you're almost certainly well past the point where it matters.

There's been discussion about death penalty on here before. I'm totally against it but people like Lucy Letby will provide fuel for people who want to bring it back.
I think it's fairer to say that people like her supply the ignition. It's rags like the Telegraph and the Mail which gleefully provide the fuel.
You only have to look at the list of countries with the death penalty before wondering if you really want to live somewhere with the same barbarism.
I agree with you but some people would say its justified. I dont, but some will. So, if your analogy is correct then yes some people want to live in a barbaric state.
I honestly wouldn't rule out the Tories contemplating the reintroduction of the death penalty at this point.
