The best time to see James play is at a relaxed pub gig. You know that. He plays great with Chrissie & playing the Pretenders back cat faithfully with no flash. I’m good pals with Mick Taylor, & he Keith & Ronnie agree, James Walbourne is the best rock/country/ blues guitar player of all time. & he’s barely 40 years old.
For me though, Darrell Bath was something else, altogether. So intuitive & natural. He was difficult to have in your band, heroin etc, & I mixed most of his parts out of my records. But I did the same with Jay Price, who was Peter’s guitar player. I just went back & did it all myself..
Steve Hands, the drummer, is playing with the Only Ones & had a beautiful meet in Hebden Bridge, 2 weeks back . & we have resolved to finally put a record out..:)

If you haven’t listened to the song before, listen to the Dream Theater - Under A Glass Moon Score version. Every single band member are a joke at how good they are, especially Mike Portnoy on drums. Superb band!

Ritchie Blackmore was my guitar hero growing up but I still maintain that one of the best guitarists I’ve seen was a blind guy playing Hendrix at The Changes in Barnsley 1975 , I think they were called The Blind Guitarist Band !!

Many too many to list, but my personal absolute favourite is Alex Lifeson from Rush.
He's never a showy guitarist, leaves space in songs where needed and can sound like three guitarist's, even when live.

Threads like this are impossible. There are so many great guitarists out there. Lead often take centre stage but there are some great rhythm players out there as well who are completely underrated and lets not forget some fantastic solo and Spanish guitar folks. The list is endless. I always think of guitarists in bands as I do with drummers - do they help the song/ tune or not? That's why I think, as an aside, drummers like Ringo and Watts were always underrated.
