In the second match of the 1964/65 season the Reds were beaten 5-1 at Bristol City. Full back Alan Hopper scored two own goals. The following week he scored another against Lincoln City in the League Cup, although Barnsley won the game 2-1 with two goals from John Byrne. Two days later, back in a league game, Barnsley drew 1-1 with Reading at Oakwell. Eddie O’Hara scored for the Reds and Alan Hopper had the dubious distinction of scoring yet another own goal, his 4th in the first five matches of the season! Must be in with a chance of being the Barnsley player with the most own goals. Anyone know? Best own goal by a Barnsley player you've seen? I recall a bullet header into his own net by Adie Moses at Leeds in 97/98. Great finish!
Futcher chipped Baker from 30 yards at least once. Certainly wasn't his only own goal and he had previous... The record books state he never scored for Barnsley, but he did, he just happened to be playing for someone else at the time.
Thing was, we were about 3-0 up against West Brom at the time, so were able to laugh about it. Clive had come running out to get the ball, Futch hadn’t noticed and lobbed it back on the half volley without looking back. 2 of my all-time favourite Reds players, only behind Redders. One of the most bizarre things I ever saw at Japanese Whispers was those two standing with their pints in their hands on the edge of the dancefloor, whilst the rest of the squad were showing off their dance moves.
I remember the Reading game. Hopper's own goal in that one was from between 20 and 25 yards out and flew into the top corner. There seemed no obvious pressure on him to do what he did. I thought that he scored five own goals that season, but it is hard to track them without going through the scorers for every opposing team. I recall that he scored two at Bristol City and the one at home to Reading, but can't place the other two.
Thanks for jogging my memory! I do recall this now. Actually, despite the own goals, Hopper was a pretty good full-back.
Chris Morgan's bullet backpass against Gillingham was highly amusing, especially as we went on to win 4-1. An excellent match during a rancid season. De Zeeuw at Grimsby was a good one as well. Only his second game iirc.
One of the few matches I missed that season, but @Jimmy viz still waxes lyrical about it to this day. Devastated I never saw it.
thanks for this post... really enjoyed this watch... great og, Adie. Shame to see Morgs looking like Mr Barnsley, knowing that he stuffed it all up soon after this. He couldha been a Barnsley legend but showed himself to a self centred thicko.
