Around 7 minutes in. Seeing it from this angle, makes me think the ref got it spot on. The ball carries on rolling in the direction Cole was running in. The chances are, if the Wigan defender had got his toe to it, the ball would have gone off to the side. The fact that it didn't remotely change its trajectory indicates to me that it was indeed a foul.
Really hard to tell. Cole definitely got their first but the fact the ball bounces quite high makes me think the defender got a touch.
One frame looks like the defender gets a block in, the next shows the ball past the defenders leg. I think Cole tried to lift the ball as the tackle came in. Not quite sure how the ref saw it as he was directly behind them and another player but think he got it right.
Defender might have got a touch but the ball bounces towards goal and Cole would have still been clean through if not brought down. Sending off all day long for me.
It was like Phillips at Wembley.. ref called it that's that. We can argue all day about it What I did notice is the amount of reds being issued in L1 yesterday.. 6, including a brace for Fleetwood
Tbh I don’t care. We haven’t had a sniff of a penalty for what seems like years, even when the defender has smashed through us at waist height. About time we got a dodgy one, and against the egg chasers… even better.
It's not as cut and dried as that, though. If a defender makes a challenge where there's no contact with the ball, it's a foul. Making contact with the ball on the other hand, still doesn't automatically mean it's a fair challenge. 30 years ago when I was at school, the generally agreed rule was man before ball = foul. Ball before man = fair. Tackling from behind = foul in any case, unless the player with the ball happened to be this certain lad who thought he was much better than everyone else and never ceased to let us know, in which case it was encouraged. Things are a lot more nuanced these days with contact reduced to a minimum in order to protect players, and I must admit there are points which I still don't fully get. I certainly wouldn't want to be a ref, responsible for processing all of ths information in a split second, then making a possibly game-changing decision based on it.
I think the two players reach the ball so close to the same moment that it is impossible to discern, even in slow motion. Nevertheless, once the ball didn't depart in the direction the defender had hoped, he kicked out at the player to ensure he prevented the goalscoring opportunity. I can't say that the ref could analyze the detail well enough in real time to call it but I'd say there's enough intent on the player there to say it wasn't a clear and obvious error. Doubtful it'll even be appealed, let alone overturned.
If they try to appeal that they need to look at this video first. As clear a red card as you could wish to see. He cleaned out Cole 100%. Going to watch the rest of this later on my big telly but very impressed with what saw just now. Absolutely top quality goal from Devante
Yes I've watched it a frame at a time what is clear is Cole diverts the ball towards goal - it may or may not have touched the defender, I think it probably did but as others have said thats not relevant as the defender cuts straight across Cole and takes him out. Cole was in on goal from the speed and direction of the ball and cleaned out so Red card is the correct decision Quite often it wouldn't be a red as the ref wouldn't be sure and I would be annoyed if it was our player - but temper that with how he dived in It wont be overturned. Isnt this the same ref that Sent Mads off last season after missing the first foul on him so for once a marginal decision in our favour
Absolutely 100% a sending off. Thought so when I saw it live. And that clip doesnt leave me with any doubt.
Terrible tackle, red all day long. Also highlights their number 11s blatant dive trying to win a penalty, did he even get booked for that?
