Is it time to move these lads on? They seem to be a pair that we just haven't used at all, especially McCarthy.
McCarthy looked OK at the start of last season then had a really bad injury - he has been out for a year and still getting back to fitness though it sounds like he is close now. Not sure whats wrong with Cundy but he as also been injured all season No way should we be moving them on until we see how there recovery has gone
In my opinion, no. Cundy came from a Championship side and had decent experience at that level. Their fans seemed mystified as to why he'd dropped to league 1. Hi early showings weren't very impressive, but I think there's enough reason to suspect he has the potential to do well. I personally think he'd be best used in the middle of the back 3, where his lack of pace would be less exposed. McCarthy, I knew and know nothing about, other than what I saw for us. I'm more than willing to give him a chance to prove himself when he returns. If we move them on, we'll replace them with 'gambles' for this level. We might as well gamble on giving the players we have a proper shot at it, rather than gambling on someone else.
Cundy will walk into our back three if he’s fully fit. McCarthy won’t be a million miles off either. It’s a shame it’s not properly got going for either.
Thought McCarthy was steady when playing, really wanted him to have a run of games. Cundy seems very clumsy on the ball though, seems good in the air, but slow and ponderous at other times but deserves more time & again, a proper run in. That back pass to our keeper last season though, I still have nightmares about after conceded to that.
McCarthy did his ACL last September and is normally back in the fold but the staff want to properly condition him again. Need to judge him when we see him back - for me it would be too harsh to move him on
According to Wiki, Cundy has played only 13 times in the Championship. The bulk of his 246 games were at non-league level.
This is the problem with us needing another CB now - we’ve got two injured who might be the answer. Both got decent experience and looked somewhat promising. If they’re nearly back thhen we might be ok. Or they might flop. Tough call.
Cundy always looked to me like a Wigan defender; big and slow. That might change with fitness and match sharpness of course so I wouldn't write him off. None of us know much about McCarthy. He could be a gem. Although Kacper and Shepherd don't look bad at all. Give them some time to click as a unit and the CB options aren't looking too bad.
