It was 10 years ago we got around 3m + a further 7m(ish) when he went to City. We probably got a bit more recently with the 15% share of Everton's 2.5m European bonus as well if media reports are true. Inflation wise £3m 10 years ago is about £5m in today's money according to the retail price index. Do you expect the same return on Kitch if we sell?
To be fair even cryne admitted he underestimated Stones potential Should've been at least 10M upfront
If we tried to hold out for 10 John might not have had half the career he’s had. We got a good price for him with all the add one’s. Also, it’s very unfair on Kitch to put him in the same conversation. The club have a value, unless that’s met he will still be here next week.
Whilst it's generally accepted to slate the board at the time for the sale of Stones - based on the comments by PC at the time that "they didn't know how good he was" - his sale is by far the biggest income we've ever received for a player. If anyone at the time had told you we'd receive £10m plus for a player who came through our academy and played half a season in the first team, you'd have bitten their hand off. Regardless of the fact that those of us who watched him come through the ranks could see he was first class. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and in this case hindsight shows us that the deal they did was bang on. A lower up front cost with a higher sell-on clause netted us a much higher income, precisely because the player had everything it took to go to the very top. Perhaps they did know how good he was after all, and negotiated on that basis. Of course if Stones had picked up injuries at Everton it might never have happened so it was higher risk, but if they'd sold for a straight £4m at the time everyone would have been delighted, and we'd have landed up £6m+ short of what we got.
And for what it's worth, I think turning down £4m for Kitching is mental. He'll be a decent Championship player, but nowt more. If Coventry come back tomorrow, take whatever they offer, even if it's £3.5m.
We only got £29,999 for Tommy Taylor and yet he was a much better Football player than Liam Kitching. This board confuses me.
He's certainly no John Stones KFC. I think the club have got it about right though. If we have another good season and Kitching has likewise, given the length of his contract, he should still be worth three to four million next summer. We're deferring the cashing in rather than losing the money completely. That said Coventry do seem to have money burning a hole in their pocket at the moment and we might not get quite as generous an offer from anyone else.
Wasn't Carl Tiler wasted by Clough at Notts Forest, not as bad as Dave Currie though admittedly. And I think we got £1.5 mill and most of it went into the new East stand.
