The latest episode is with Dorking Wanderers manager, chairman and owner Marc White. I've seen bits of him on YouTube, but it's quite a story, how he set up a team in the lowest league in Crawley, and has got them all the way up to the National League over the last 24 years. He says he set the club up because he didn't get the appeal of the Premier League, having previously watched Wimbledon. I can imagine he's quite a divisive character, but it's certainly a great story.
I'm making Dorking my second team. Marc White is so funny and what he's done is incredible. I hope they get promoted and he can manage without badges.
He's very admirable. He set the club up just to play football with his mates, and he's put everything he has into it and got to where they are without being a millionaire. It's an incredible story, and I'd love to see them get into the league. I do wonder though, with the size of the clubs in that league now, and the money sloshing about even at that level, whether they've reached a ceiling without an outside investor coming in, which Marc seems set against.
I don't live too far away and have walked past the ground many times but never seen them play. I think I'll have to pop down. Lovely place, with Denbies Vineyard on one side of the valley and Box Hill on the other.
