Has anybody got any idea why professional footballers feel the need and indeed some managers to do it? Is it just a habit they get into because theirs no need for it and it's disgusting.

Exercise makes you secrete more of a protein that makes your saliva more sticky and viscous. It’s a reaction to a genuine physical change within their bodies. Managers have no such excuse mind, as far as I’m aware.

Way things are going with the rules and var you might have to leave the field of play to spit in a enclosed area

Aye, not like we didn’t go through a world wide pandemic a few years ago is it.... even then, some players struggled to refrain from spitting in the first games back.

Fair enough not all of it but if you had played regularly you’d know there is,particularly when it’s cold not sure why but my body always used to produce excess of it. Mindst I always tried to get shut over the touch lines .

It's a natural by product of physical exercise unfortunately and in the heat of a football match, your opponents are hardly likely to stop playing while you toddle off to gob in the toilet are they?
I find the same happens to me cycling and playing badminton. While cycling I usually stop and deposit it where nobody is likely to be walking, when playing badders I normally nip to the toilets

He'd prefer them to swallow as spitting is rude.

Would slip on it. That's why. But seriously. the environment they are playing in contributes. (General spit we all swallow all the time. It's phlegm that is a major issue) . Not something I like myself. I generally carry or ask for a tissue rather than swallow the bugger. I think it's more team field sports in general, rather than just just Football.
Glad it's a sending off offence if aimed at an opponent.

    Interesting fact yuk.
Did You Know...? The average human produces 25,000 quarts of saliva or spit in a lifetime. That's enough saliva to fill 2 swimming pools!
0.5 to 1.5 ltrs per day.
