Saturday's ref Marc Edwards goes straight to the top of the rankings, comfortably taking over from long term leader Carl Brook.

How does Lewis Smith score, other than being a cracking gymnast.

Was going to give him a generous 2, but I anticipate they’ll be 1 or 2 voting 10 as per, so I’m giving a big fat 0 to help counteract that barm pot action

Gave him a 1 for remembering to bring his whistle.

Gave him a 0 and I think it's quite generous.

I thought he was actually OK in the second half, and no complaints about the pen. Even if their player was offside, that's not the ref's job. However, most of the rest of his decisions in the first half defied belief. I'd probably give him 3.5, but I'm rounding it down to 3 as if he'd given us the penalty he should have done at 2-0, I'm pretty sure we'd have gone on to get something out of the game.

Some strange decisions in the first half, taking what seemed like 30 minutes before awarding us a free kick despite several worthy "offences" yet giving Pompy one every time a player fell down. Pompey's penalty was fair enough but from the iFollow angle he looked to have got Cotter's completely wrong (others on here say it was a dive though). His main failure for me was in not dishing out yellow cards to Pompey for time wasting until giving a solitary one on 80 minutes. What happened to the time wasting clampdown?

    Giving him 4.

Edit; I had a bad feeling when I heard he was from Wigan...

Shouldn't the fact that he turned up actually work against him?!

I have started looking at player stats after a game on fotbob and other apps. Bemuses me why the referee isn't given a performance number as well.

He was pretty crap but the 0 and 1 scores are ridiculous - we’ve seen dozens of much worse refereeing performances over the years and I suspect we’ll see much worse this season.

He made some strange decisions, but the pen was probably the right decision, even if it was offside then that isn’t his fault, our penalty shout was a dive for me, the second half he was fine in the main, and so whilst he made a lot of strange calls I’ve given 4/10 - I toyed with giving him 5.

I don’t think they‘re ridiculous, you already said he was crap and made strange decisions, there have been many terrible if not worse officiating over the years but this thread wasn’t around then or I suspect we would ‘ve seem more 0s and 1s. At least people who give these low marks post their reason/s. Those giving 10s never do, I suspect they’re just being dicks and trying to spoil the thread

My point is if you give him 0 or 1, when he at least showed signs of competence at some stages, where is there to go from there?

He made some decisions I wasn’t in agreement with ok but he was a million miles away from the worst I’ve seen - that’s the base for zero, surely? If you give him 0, what do you give a ref who is truly dreadful, gets every key decision wrong, etc? He didn’t give yellow cards for nothing fouls like some do, he wasn’t over officious like a lot are. Didn’t try and make the game all about him, like we see relatively often. He might have got his yellow card out a bit quicker for time wasting ok, but at least he wasn’t brandishing them like confetti for nothing.

He wasn’t anything like as bad as the fella we got first day of the season in my eyes but he got away with it a bit because we won 7-0.

People can vote how they like of course, and I expect nobody to agree with my views about anything, but I honestly think if you score Tuesday’s ref 0 or 1 you leave yourself nowhere to go at all for a truly dreadful ref. Hopefully we don’t get one.

I honestly thought he was very poor. His 2 assistants were at odds with each other with the offside flag, one waited to see if offside player got the ball the other flagged straight away. That should’ve been part of his pre- match instructions. As for my 0 mark, I was going to give him a 2 but as I said in my post I gave him zero as I correctly anticipated a 10 mark or 2 so I wanted to try and offset that a little.

Poor first half - some strange decisions all going against us No real complaints over their penalty but to me the Cotter one was clear
    Didnt handle the timewasting well
Id give him a 3.5 so seeing as @Merde Tete rounded down Im rounding up to 4

As others have said if you give him a 0 or 1 where do you put a Willard or Kettle performance - Ive seen a lot worse in the last season and a bit in L1, but he wasn't very good. Those giving 10 are just being silly though

There is no minus score available, so I'm abstaining. The kid had his grandfather running the line. Apart from the cataracts & the dodgy hip he did OK for someone in their eighties. An offside free kick taken 8 yards into the opponents half really says it all on the standards of officiating.
