Four penalties have been awarded against us this season. Two were stone wall and daft by O'Keeffe and the French lad on his debut. The other two were debatable imho. The shot on Saturday was blasted at McCart's hand (too close for him to move his hand from my perspective) and for the Portsmouth penalty their lad had already shot and missed and had no chance of getting to the ball when Roberts collided with him. I've seen one other incident I thought was a nailed on penalty when Styles brought down a Cambridge player. For us, not much. A couple of shots in the Portsmouth game that looked like they may have hit a hand, but I wasn't sure, and... See my feelings about this above. Have we been badly done to this season? As I say, a couple of those against I think were debatable but the ball did hit McCart's hand and Roberts did bring down their player. On the other side, the ball may have hit the hand of a Portsmouth player. To be honest, I don't feel as though I've got a lot to complain about regarding decisions. However, the challenges by O'Keeffe, de Gevi and Styles were all nuts and that's what I'm really annoyed about. Last season the hand ball at Burton and the VAR decision at Wembley were howlers.
I did some research it's 1 pen in 69 games vs 12 conceeded in 69 games that's 170.2% difference. For us to get to 12 pens on our current average of 0.014 per game, its going to take 18.6 seasons or 857 games without conceding another pen for things to even themselves out.
At the match I thought the potential handball shout against Blackpool would have been very harsh if given and that the ref got it right. Having watched it again on TV, I thought it looked a lot more of a penalty from that angle, but was still prepared to give the ref the benefit of the doubt, bearing in mind just how fast modern football is and that I didn't think there was any intent from the Blackpool defender to handle the ball. However, when seeing what was given against us on Saturday, I'm now convinced that the Blackpool shout was actually a very clear penalty.
That's some stat! Let's hope it doesn't take that long to get 12 penalties as my nerves wouldn't be able to take it!
Cant remember which game but there was also a very clear trip of Cotter this season that wasnt given - some have accused him of going down too dramatically but that doesnt seem to be a problem for opposing players. There was also a second handball in the Blackpool game where the defender controlled a bouncing ball with his arm - no idea why that wasn't given
It was mainly last season that we got the worst of it. This year, so far, there hasn't been many clear and obvious middle fingers from referees
Imagine the collective sharp intake of breath around three sides of the ground tomorrow night when the ref points to the spot, in our favour I mean. There will be a period of nervous silence as the taker lines it up. No idea who that might be. Who knows how to take one?? He runs up, the ball is flying towards the top corner but miraculously their keeper takes off and palms it round the post. I’m not sure I could take that kind of disappointment…
It's happened loads of times. It happened quite regularly at the beginning of the 2003/4 season. Gallimore, Lumsdon and Gorre all missed penalties at home that cost six points.
I know but I mean the disappointment of waiting so long for a spot kick only for us to miss it. I’d put money on it happening
Well Phillips did miss the only one we had last season fortunately we were 4-0 up and also the keeper pushed it straight back to him so he scored with the rebound. No idea who would take one if we got one now Caddon or Cole probably maybe we will find out before Easter
The other factor that you'd imagine would have some correlation is that we've been a successful team in that duration in which we've hardly won a penalty. Around 4th best in the league and you'd imagine more likely to be exposed to winning pens in the opponent's box than conceding in our own.
