After a comfortable victory over Shrewsbury in the week, we have a chance to go 4 wins and 4 defeats at home with the visit of struggling Fleetwood. The 15th best home team take on the 13th best away team in league 1, with the bookies having the reds as 4/5 favourites, and the Cod Army as 16/5 outsiders. Fleetwood have gained just 11 points so far this season, from 13 games, albeit 8 of those 11 points have come away from home. They're actually unbeaten in their last 3 away games, with victories over fellow strugglers Reading and Cheltenham, and a point at a Burton side who are in good form. Their away defeats have come largely to sides further up the division, with a losses so far at Bolton, Derby and Charlton. Their overall form as improved drastically however since Lee Johnson took over. Under Scott Brown, they'd managed 1 point from their first 6 games of tbe season. Streaky Lee hasn't quite lived up to his nickname just yet, however has certainly straightened results out slightly. Its worth noting that Fleetwood have had 5 red cards already this season in all competitions, 3 for defenders, 1 midfielder and 1 goalkeeper, suggesting they could be got at, at the back. Opposition teams have had 4 red cards against them too, suggesting it could be a physical affair. At Oakwell, we've met 5 times, with us winning the last 2, losing the first 2, and drawing the JPT game in between. Lee Johnson was Barnsley manager for the 1-0 home defeat to Fleetwood in October 2015 and the JPT draw the following February. Lee Johnson's last Barnsley game was the 2nd leg of that JPT tie, where the reds were victorious on penalties away from home after a 2-2 draw. Referee Neil Hair, as you'd imagine, has a good head of hair. He's taken charge of 7 football league games this season, dishing out less than 4 cards per game on average, almost half of that of Tuesday nights referee. He's yet to give a red card this season too, and has only awarded 1 penalty (in a football league trophy game). He last took charge of a Barnsley game in January 2019, our 4-1 away win over Wimbledon. It's 2 years since his last Fleetwood game, their 2-2 home draw with Sunderland. Throughout his career, he hasn't issued many red cards. To put it into perspective, he gave 6 red cards last season, which is fewer than Tuesday nights referee has given so far this season. I actually think this will be a tougher game than Tuesday night, and I think we may miss Callum Styles. That being said, we have a tendency to do well against the weaker sides in the division, and as they've only scored 10 goals this season (only Shrewsbury and Cheltenham have scored fewer), I reckon we'll have enough to see the game out to nil. I'm going for 2-0 with Cole and McAtee getting the goals.
Good analysis as always Archey, except Keiffer Moore's head injury was at Gilllingham. Coincidentally, we won that game 4.1 as well
I think this one will be a much tighter game with probably just 1 goal in it. Either 1-0 (Cole) or 2-1 us (Cole & Watters) Can’t wait to see that this prediction was a load of codswallop and we win 5-0
Good write up as usual Archey, I won't predict the score but I think another home win is on the cards
Amended now mate. I think it was the scoreline which caught me out. I actually checked the Wimbledon game and saw Moore was subbed off and put 2 and 2 together.
Had totally forgotten it would be LJ in the opposition dug-out, which makes it a grudge match for me. Hope Collins has prepared them for attacks down bomb alley and to defend the POMO at all times.
I'm a big fan of Cod Vlogs so I know more about Fleetwood than most sides in the league. They seem to have been pretty dire so far. Plus the difference between the bottom few sides in the league and the top 6 to 8 looks like a proper gulf again this season. Bearing that in mind, I think the only chance of Fleetwood getting anything from the game would be if they put in their best performance of the season, and we just don't turn up. Can't see it personally, as we seem to be gradually getting into our stride. A very comfortable 4-1 to us.
I think we will win to nil, Fleetwood have a better record away than at home but not against the league’s better teams. 4-0, with at least one of the goals from a centre back.
1-0 reds. Think we look quite blunt as an attacking when Styles isn’t there but hopefully pressure tells, one goes in off Cosgroves bum, and we go home happy.
