Penistone Church are in Tier 9, Horsham tier 7 same as the Northern Premier. Losing 3-1 to Marine was much worse than drawing with Horsham.

Yep, all game, on a crumbling open terrace, watching basically our first team at the time (including Hourihane, Winnall I think and Conor bloody Wilkinson) look like they'd never met - compounded by the fact we were bottom of L1 and had lost 7 or 8 in a row, think it might have been a club record.

Altrincham absolutely the worst based on all the above.

Chester at home was abysmal, Man City QF away we expected nowt obviously but no-one looked remotely interested, definition of went down with a whimper in front of about 6,000 Reds fans. Other than that, Cardiff at Wembley - first time in 96 years we had a chance to reach the final, after beating Liverpool and Chelsea, and we put in a limp performance against an average Cardiff side.

Yeah the Tony Cotton game. Cardiff was abysmal.

I like a drink as many can gather through my various rambles and tirades.

Anyway to cut a long story short. I couldn't get pissed or get a semi on in strip club after Cardiff game.

Ipswich ruined me. Cardiff made me a miserable lovely person.

Last night was awful. The Man City game a few years ago the players might have well just turned up with their autograph books. There was an awful game at home to Birmingham in 1988. And we weren’t at the races at all when we lost at home to Blackpool in ?1982, but the players’ minds were on the replay with Liverpool in the League Cup the following day.

The worst has to be Altrincham though. It was a **** day all round. It was an uncovered terrace and rained so hard I found out my raincoat was as waterproof* as a tea bag. My programme in my inside pocket had turned into paper mache. The trains were ****** up so it took ages to get home, with us having to stand up all the way to Sheffield, and standing up for long periods doesn’t agree with me. And to cap it all off, halfway through the game I learned a friend was about to die.

As for the game, it can be summed up in two moments. Firstly, Sam Winnall’s pathetic dive that had the entire away end shouting at him to stop cheating and start playing bloody football. And then the man formerly known as Direwatch telling Josh Scowen not to bother passing it to one of his teammates cos they’re rubbish, as he came to take a corner. Josh’s polite chuckle disguised the thought bubble above his head that said ‘yep, I’ve already worked that out’. If you’d have told us that afternoon how the season would end we would have pointed at you and laughed.

*It also brought to my attention that my trainers were cursed. I may have mentioned this before, but the ex bought me some trainers for my birthday. I wore them to the next Reds match. We lost. And then we didn’t stop losing. They were like how Billy’s Boots would have read if he instead had Willie’s** Boots. Every sodding game***. But they took such a soaking in Altrincham that I put them in the warm cupboard to dry out and forgot about them. Shortly after reverting to my old trainers we started winning. And didn’t stop. And then we got to a cup final at Wembley. And won! And then we steamrollered through the play-offs and got promoted****. So if Altrincham’s away end had a roof or if Altrincham didn’t have the climate of a rain forest, the cursed trainers would have carried on with their path of mayhem and destruction, and Lil Lee’s losing streak wouldn’t have finished at 8. There would have been no Wembley trips, no promotion. Needless to say, the cursed trainers have never been worn to another first team match. I wore them to an U21 game but thought i was pushing my luck. They are now my gardening shoes. So watch that documentary series based in Barnsley A&E and when you see a bloke lying on a trolley with a pitchfork stuck in my foot. That’ll be me.

    ** As in Ferry

*** Yes, that does mean I accept full responsibility for Lil Lee’s losing streak

****But our promotion and JPT win? All down to my change of trainers!

Got to be Altrincham and the rain didn’t help although we managed to get a seat in a small covered area

We were a poor lower 4th division side when we lost to Marine, though I’m not sure what level they played at it can’t have been lower than seventh.
We’re now a top 3rd tier side so for me last night was a worse result.

You may well be right. However, I'm not sure if you went to Marine or not but the performance that day is probably the worst I've seen by any Barnsley team. Although last night wasn't brilliant, with a bit of luck we could still have won 7-3.

Marine. Only one who gave a good performance was Spinksy on the dustbin outside our changing room post match

I agree with the matches that have been mentioned so far. And what makes some of them worse, is that we knew they were capable of so much better on the day.
And even in defeat you want to see a performance at least. For example, against Everton in '89, in front of about 32,550, at least we had a go.

It's Altrincham under Johnson as one of 8 (i think) straight losses with an unbelievable squad at this level.

Yet some people on here persist in asserting he was anything other than a complete fraud. One of the worst managers we've ever had.
