My lad went to see him at Manchester Arena the other week , said he was average not as funny as previous tour with some very strange moments , he brought a singer on that at first the audience thought was part of the comedy act but realised he wasn’t . Calder Vale Hotel (Luddite Brewery) Horbury have a comedy night once a month with about 4 comedians on , gets sold out most times

 

Micky Flanagan is the best British comic on the circuit currently, and by quite a distance.

 

My lad loves Ross Noble, so have given him a go in the past but just don't find him very funny at all.
Conversely get him on a panel show and I find he's usually very funny !

 

Same here for panel shows that's why I went. Big mistake.

 

You should have gone to the Theatre Royal in York instead, to see "The Merchant Of Venice". It was a superb production.

 

I can absolutely assure you I don't like Mrs Brown's Boys. I detest it with a passion.

What's made you think I like it? Or was it some edgy Stewart Lee comedy?

 

People used to take the mick at work and laugh at me, but then I changed jobs and became a comedian.
So who's laughing now ehh!!.

Stewart Lee is comedy for people who don't want to laugh, but want to feel better than everyone else for liking Stewart Lee.

 

Best comedian currently doing the circuit is Dejphon Chansiri, not seem him live yet but his online starical pastiche of a football club owner is superb.

 

Seen Sean Locke twice and he was brilliant but the best by some distance live is Rhod Gilbert. Seen him 3 times and have tickets for next year. Frankie Boyle was very good too

Lee Mack live was the biggest disappointment. Just wasn't funny.

 

Best comedian I’ve seen live was Ken Dodd , genius

 

Can't really give an opinion on modern comedians. Cos I've not seen em live. Although I do find a few very funny. And some utter s41te. On tv.

But give me Bobby Knutt (RIP) afore Peter Kaye anyday. His life observation stuff was way ahead of his time. After Bob Monkhouse led him in that direction after watching and telling Bobby, to watch Bill Cosby videos.

Billy Pearce. (Get chance go see him)
Ken Dodd. (Master of the one liners and by far the longest gig. Less than 3 hrs and you were short changed)
Freddie Starr (bonkers)

Most imo would have filled arenas in todays world.

 

Bob Monkhouse, absolutely brilliant.

 

Have you seen every single one. ?.
I have seen club and pub comedians in my lifetime that would have given some of the stars of the past and present. more than a run for their money. The comedians was a great show for a lot of them to be showcased. And many made their mark through that show. And through the wheeltappers and shunters.
I've seen lots of the greats of the past. One I regret not seeing is Tommy Cooper. Audiences in hysterics before he even showed his face.
Not knocking Billy btw. And his Biography is an eye opener. He was abused as a child, and grew up in a world of shop floor humour.
Which imo is a great place to learn.

 

Saw Monkhouse at Batley variety club. 1st thing he asked the audience was. "What do you want the subject matter of the show to be." ? Sex won hands down. ( as if he didnt know already lol.) The number of folk that had heard from others who saw him say he was a mucky/filthy comedian. Were told bu11shit,. I'd say they had never seen a proper mucky one. Most of his humour imo was tongue in cheek. Double entendre and self deprecating. Not mucky at all. (If so, and some of the audience thought he was mucky they were Just prudes)

Jethro was brilliant, didn't get the recognition he deserved.

 

Saw him 3 times mate. Hilarious. I remember Jim Davidson. Making the point of comedians comedian. On the Des O'Connor show. (of which Jethro was a regular) Jethro didnt really have to travel far to fill theatres (all over the south west) and I was a little disappointed with that. He'd have killed it in Blackpool for example. But he was happy to be nearer home. Not traipsing round the country.
I put him among my top 3 seen. All with different styles. Knutty. Jethro and Billy Pearce in no particular order.
Billy Pearce probably the most versatile to suit any audience.

 

I remember at Butlins in the late 80s, Little & Large and Bernie Clifton were a bit more rude than normal, not what you were used to seeing on telly.
And they were very funny, Clifton and his ostrich were hilarious.

 

For me Clifton was at his best on his Radio show. Fantastic adlibber. He used to have local celebrities and a live audience. Funny on stage also.
Little and large. Cannon and ball. Very funny. But Best live for me I saw. And my favourite double act ever. Morecambe and wise. They were the ones to make me love live theatre as a child. Opera house Blackpool. My parents were addicted to live summer season shows. And I followed in their footsteps. And carried over to live music events and musicals. I love threads like this. So much nostalgia and happy memories.
As they say. Laughter is the best medicine.
