Yeah - she had somewhere about her that I imagined being a place on earth. Along with Chynna Philips on "Hold On" And Susannah Hoff on "Eternal Flame" And Natalie Imbruglia on "Torn" (somehow I could not edit the above post. Perhaps due to ale)
Wiki. The first video to air on MTV was one emblematic of MTV's concept, The Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star" which was then immediately followed by a brief message about music and television coming together and then "You Better Run" by Pat Benatar.
Aah, just googled it. First video on MTV was indeed Video Killed the Radio Star. First video on MTV Europe in 1987 was, as I thought, Money for Nothing. So we are both right.
The reason Bohemian Rhapsody is often credited as the first music video is actually because of the medium on which it was shot. Prior to that most footage was shot on film. Although it wasn't the first to be shot on video either. It was a few things: shot specifically as a promotional tool for the song, to be played on TOTP as Queen were on tour, it used video tape and video effects, and the song (and the video) were very successful which brought the concept of a "music video" into the public consciousness. It didn't invent putting music and performance together outside a live environment, video technology had been used by other bands, but it was the first time the term "music video" had been heard by much of the public and there was now a realisation by the music industry that they could get their acts on popular TV shows without them actually being there.
I thought the main reason for it was that the operatic section was completely impossible to perform live? Granted, TOTP was mimed anyway, but they didn't want to even give the impression that they could play that part of the song on stage.
A TV channel that *played* music. It no longer does. Like VH1 (originally Video Hits 1). Back in the 90s and 00s, TV channels playing music videos were quite popular on the Sky box. You could put a channel on and listen/watch videos from various artists. You could even ring a 40p+ per call line to choose a track to play. YouTube and Spotify killed them off though.
Probably the same for me other than kids tv programmes such as button moon, I would have been 3 at the time.
It's a huge myth that Queen were the first with Bohemian Rhapsody. I'm a Queen fan and the truth is they would have been on tour in Dundee on the expected date that TOTP went out. As they anticipated the new single of being a hit they came up with the idea to record a video to show in their absence. Nobody had done this before for this specific reason which is where the first video thing comes from. It just happened that the new single went a bit big and got to No.1 for nine weeks.
