Or out longer than envisaged. Not so sure boro would make him 1st choice to bring back. Given the operation on his hand. Or because Worksops 1st team goalie is back fit. And playing. Cooper was signed if I remember rightly cos Malkowski was injured.
Was it the Ipswich Paul Cooper that had a unique way at the time of being more to one side on pens opening up the net, but had a good record at saving them? Or am I getting my wires crossed with someone else
Yes. I believe he used to stand slightly to one side but sort of crouch forward a bit and swing his arms as if he was going to leap to the side where he'd left the bigger gap. This tempted some penalty takers to go for the shorter gap. He always went the way of the shorter gap and saved a lot of penalties.
He was known for being a good penalty saver if I remember rightly. I think I read an interview once where he said he watched the knee of the player taking it! not sure how it worked but it seemed to for him
Yeah, he was only signed as cover. If the 1st choice keeper is fit now, there’s little point him being there. Regardless of Robert’s scenario, this isn’t linked.
It's easy to quantify a keeper's chances as predominantly luck. A combination of talent and a simple toss of a coin. But that did not prevent Ipswich Town No1 and 1981 UEFA Cup winner Paul Cooper from making an incredible eight out of ten penalty saves during the 1979/80 English top-flight season. Those statistics truly deny the laws of probability, so there has to be more to it to maintain such an outstanding penalty-saving record. “To be honest, my secret was once I had got on a roll after saving a few penalties, I developed a reputation for it and I think that played on the mind of the takers to my advantage,” Cooper told FIFA.com. “My philosophy was to get the taker to place the ball where I wanted it to go and you have to show the opposing taker that you’re very confident. Once I got on a roll of saving a few, penalty-takers started to think: ‘This guy has a reputation’, and their confidence decreased while mine grew. “That certainly helped me a lot. It put added pressure on the taker when they thought they were taking penalties against someone who had a good record.”
I'm pretty sure we beat them 2- 1 at oakwell be around 86 maybe 87 not sure, they had been recently relegated from the old Div 1 and I'm sure someone scored a pen past him into the ponty end could have been stuart gray and I remember his stance I'd never seen anything like it, don't suppose the poster on here that does the videos has any footage?
He scored a great goal for us at Maine Road. While playing for Man City. Agnew hit a shot from about 30 yards, Cooper dived but missed it, it hit the woodwork, hit the back of Cooper's head and went in. We won 2-1.
