Alfreton (wherever that is) v Walsall called off at last minute. Travelling Walsall fans already in the ground. Apparently pitch frozen but obviously tv hoping to get it played. I’d be fuming. Absolutely no concern to those who travel.
At least it's not a Barnsley to Exeter sized trip. Walsall to Alfreton is not too bad but still too far to travel for nothing in bad weather conditions. Personally, if I were a Walsall fan, I would have stayed at home anyway. This is a non-league ground with no undersoil heating, so what did they expect. Had the BBC not been there it would have been off about 0900 this morning.
It stinks doesn’t it? Time after time football fans are completely disregarded as if they are just an inconvenience, whether it’s rearranging games at short notice or calling them off too late to stop people travelling. As I said though I wouldn’t have risked it in this weather but I’m not as hardy as some!
Agree its not cracking for the fans, but as inconveniences go, it's not that bad. Walsall to Alfreton is probably barely an hour. I'd have wanted them to try and get the game on myself if they was any chance of it being on. Its hardly Barnsley to Exeter.
Oh for the good old days. At one time a frozen pitch wasn’t much of an issue in fact in Finland it still isn’t
Nothing to do with TV, Ian. I was directing the programme and when we arrived, we simply couldn't believe it would go ahead. Even when they took the covers off, it looked like a skating rink. I took a walk out to have a look and it wasn't great. If there'd been any pressure from us, it would have been to call it off earlier rather than later, but Alfreton were adamant it was playable. So we rehearsed in full, only to get word the ref was pulling it with 12 seconds to go before we ran our opening titles. You can't believe the headaches that causes. The fans should, indeed, be fuming, but not at the BBC.....
