I know it comes up most years but I'll never tire of recalling it....... Reds 1 Manchester City 0 - League Cup 4th Round at Oakwell in front of 33,792 fans. What a cross from Banger and what a header from Big Trev. The noise that night was unbelievable, it will forever be one of my favourite nights at Oakwell. It was also our first ever victory against City, we'd previously lost 9 times and drawn 6. Early on the commentator refers to "..the pictures and the noise offer evidence about how football is booming in Barnsley....". Wasn't it just - our support at that time was fantastic.
Wish I could go back in time to experience it live again. What an absolutely amazing atmosphere and a fantastic team.
Went straight from Oakwell to The Chennels to watch it ont telly, great days to be a Barnsley supporter.
Round trip from college in Leicester with a couple of Chelsea supporting mates from the local pub. What a night.
What a night that was for this 9 year old. The whole club from the top down should be made to watch this and others.
Last game I went to with my grandad. Him & my dad stood on the West, while I was with mates in the Ponty. I can picture his face now when I met them at FT - proper disbelief
Spine tingling. Wish I could go back. I was 12 and enjoying my first season as a season ticket holder with my dad, but at the time of course, I just didn't appreciate how special those times were. Sigh...
I was there in West Upper. Great night. 33792 for a last 16 League Cup tie. Amazing attendance, when you think what sort of crowds we get these days for the League Cup.
What made things all the sweeter was that I had had to endure 22 seasons of Division 3 and 4 at Oakwell, 1959- 81 before that season.
So pleased I put this on my YouTube channel and that I've shared it today. I love that this and other videos I have bring back great memories for those who were there.
Was in the Brewery Stand, as it was known as then. It didn't get much better for me, than those days. Premier League, Wilson, etc was great, but finance of football was different then & we really had a team that could take it to the big boys of football. We pulled bigger crowds than many back then & TV & sponsorship / etc was minimal.
1st game my dad missed cos he didn't feel well, 3 weeks later he passed away. Brilliant game but bitter sweet memories for me. RIP Les,
Rimmo on as physio. Bloody hell, what great memories. Was at the care home in Headingley with my Dad today. He can't even remember Barnsley, or family names. We shared this at the time, going to the matches & he grew up with Rimmo in Mapplewll, although Norman was older than my Dad. Has brought a tear to my eyes, watching this again, for many reasons. Dek Parker missing from the standard first 11, although Riley was a decent player, not as savvy as Parker though. Wish Dad was still well enough to remember it.
Not sure a like was the appropriate response for me to make but it was the only option I had. Wishing you and your dad well. Such a cruel disease.
Cheers mate. He's getting great care, up in Headingley, where I live. Dad knew them all in his time. He's still got a smile on his face. It is terrible to see someone go through this. Mum died of cancer a little over 18 months ago & that was not much better. It is just getting old. We are all goona go one way, or the other.
We did the same. Remember that tw@t Jimmy Hill saying it had been a poor game littered with fouls. Plonker.
