There's an awful lot to unpack there! I'm guessing manslaughter because they'd watched too many Guy Ritchie films and were looking to injure rather than kill, but were incompetent? If it was to do with debt, you can't get your money back from a dead man.
I always think about the guys who punch people outside pubs who then go on to die from it. Everybody knows that it's possible for that to happen, but does it mean it's fair to treat every single punch as an attempted murder? As somebody who's never struck anybody in my life it wouldn't really affect me! But I think there is an interesting question about where you draw the line between intent and outcome.
I guess this case was a premeditated attack gone too far for murder to be proved. Whereas a fight outside a pub in most cases isn't the case. Manslaughter invariably. I reckon they've got off lightly regardless of manslaughter. Which can carry a sentence of life regardless. Criminal underworld don't mess about.
Yeah, I agree on balance (without knowing anything about this case past a few articles online, to be fair). Just felt like a bit of a scare gone wrong, what with the relatively small amount of money and his partner being released and all. I kind of disagree about fights outside pubs though. The fact is, if you strike somebody in the head with your fist then they might die, and there are loads of examples out there of that happening. For me, then, if you punch anybody then you should know that the death of the other person is a possible outcome, and you're accepting that as a consequence. What can that be except potential manslaughter? I think it should be treated much more harshly in general.
I don’t know , but the article says two other perpetrators fled abroad and were still at large , maybe they couldn’t prove these guys did the stabbing
Not sure if I worded it well. Generally manslaughter would be the outcome as intention to kill would be difficult to prove even if intended. It may well be the case where everyone knows a death is a possible outcome. But not meant. In most fights it's not the punch that kills but the aftermath. Eg head trauma hitting the ground. In such circumstances not only devastating for the victims family. But the perpetrators.
I don't think it's your wording to be fair, just me getting on my soapbox! I do feel a bit sorry for the perpetrators in these situations, but unlike the family they could very easily have made the key decision not to throw the punch. Whether it's the strike itself or the aftermath, everybody should be aware that even the most seemingly inconsequential bit of violence can kill, so it should never be used without very good reason. In my opinion that's basically going to be a threat to life - I don't think there's any such thing as a harmless scuffle. Add this to the very many reasons that I'm extremely glad we don't have an American attitude to guns over here! I can happily de-escalate a fist fight, but I don't fancy my chances at all with pistols...
