Personally, I don't think so, I think it'll keep growing (hopefully anyway). The women's league in basketball in USA, WNBA, have lost a lot of money every year and has always been subsidised by the men's game, the past couple years they've lost money but it's growing substantially, audience is steadily growing so it's getting more & more eyes on it, I think sponsors/businesses/etc are all aware there's potentially a lot of money to be made - look how much money has gone around the last couple of years in our women's football. We may have dips but, hopefully, it's improving long term - I have 3 sisters, would love to see them get into football (not going to be happen by the looks though!!)
Absolutely it’s been a popularity contest over the years. Absolutely brilliant that Women’s Football has reached those heights. Let’s not forget that Women’s football has been told over and over since the Euros that they should support the women more often …. There you have it.
Honestly can’t see how it’s still a ‘thing’ , I really used to look forward to it when I was younger, but for me it became an award where ‘fashionable’ winners seemed to win it over more deserving cases and then I totally lost interest.
Outside the Premier League most fully professional team sports are finding it difficult. Until they learn to cut their coats according to the cloth and understand that players playing games are not worth more than consultant brain surgeons they will struggle.
Who, in the last thirty years has paid any attention to SPOTY? This is no more than an opportunity for the right wing and misogynist retards to trot out their rhetoric about wokeness, left wing BBC and positive discrimination for women. It's extremely sad and completely predictable I'm afraid.
It’s an award that has been won by Princess Anne and her daughter, so I don’t think it’s meant to be taken seriously. But the fact it’s pissed off Joey Barton and Piers Morgan is good enough for me.
Depends on the criteria used? If it’s purely on sporting performance then like I said previously Alfie Hewitt wins easily and you have to question why was Broad in there at all if it’s about using the position of being a sportsperson in a positive light beyond just sporting achievements then it is difficult to see beyond Earps. edit: Awarded to the sportsperson "whose actions have most captured the public's imagination"
How has Ronnie O' Sullivan never won the SPOTY? They ought to change the name to just Sports Person of the Year. The only genuine personality this year was Frankie Dettori. I've got more charisma in my left testicle than a lot of the contestants. How the monotone bore Andy Murray has won it twice is beyond me.
