As promised here is one of the greatest nights in our history.
I wish you all the best for Christmas and thank you for all your support in what I do.
The Reds went toe to toe with european champions Liverpool at Anfield. It was an awful night weather wise with some Reds fans missing the kick-off, but despite that, some estimates say 18000 Barnsley fans travelled over the Pennines to watch their heroes and out sing the mighty Kop.
THIS IS THE ONLY AVAILABLE FOOTAGE OF THE TIE it was shot by a local Barnsley journalist with an early camcorder.
    enjoy!

Great stuff thank you for this.
Official attendance was just under 34k ground looked pretty full so can't physically see how people came to the conclusion of 18k, think its one of those legendary myths a bit like The Angel of Mons.
Realistically probably about 10k max there's no way it's 18k reds 16k Liverpool.

Wouldn't gave been full at the start half the Barnsley fans wouldn't have been in the ground - we didn't get there until half time

Have a look at the footage. Lots of empty seats in the home sections and lots of fans didn't make it until we'll after kick off some after half time.

17k away fans, according to the press at the time. Had a good chat with Lawro about that night some years back. His opening line; 'you should've won that - you murdered us'

Our bus broke down on the motorway on the way to Anfield and we were picked up by another Reds supporters coach. Missed the first ten minutes of the match. After the game back to our coach and where we sat had had the window knocked out and we came all the way home covered with coats etc trying to shelter from the icy conditions all the way home on the motorway! Happy days!

According to the Liverpool Daily Post we had 16,000 in attendance.
If memory serves me right; we had the full Anfield Road End, and most of the Kemlyn Road Stand too. We also filled the main stand up to around the halfway line.

We set off from Buxton, where I was working at the time, in bright sunshine and clear skies, and got as far as Warrington, before deciding that the fog was so thick that we just couldn't go on. I missed that great night.

I had a hospital appointment that day after breaking my ankle a few weeks before. When I got to the out patient department (with my red and white scarf on) the nurse asked if I was going to the match, when I told her yes she put my folder on the top of the pile and I was seen to in no time.

Respect to anybody who lugged a 1982 camcorder to a football match. Wonder what they'd have said if you'd told them people would be watching that footage on their phones 40 years later.

I got home just in time for work the following day after the bus broke down at the highest point on the M62 on the way back - "Pride of the hard shoulder" (not road) should have been the name of the bus company....

We were now visiting Liverpool, the best team in football, in their own back garden, in a Lg cup Qtr final. :)
And we went there to try and play, and we tried to beat them at their own game. Such bravery and audacity ehh from Hunter's red army (in all white that night), it was like Christmas time again for me when we played those two matches against them. Great memories.

He did a few games. I think the idea was from somebody at Oakwell to film some games and show them in pubs. I know Ardsley House showed some as there is a cutting somewhere.
    @Turvey Tyke will know more.

Went on the train as a 10yr old with my dad. Convinced we scored but Grobbelaar pulled ball back from over the line

Many thanks for that. Liverpool were European champions at the time, with a side including legends Dalglish, Rush, Hansen, Souness and Lawrenson. Liverpool were given a pre-match warning too by The Guardian reporter, who described us as "no ordinary Second Division side".
