I remember watching the Brighton game in the Coach & Horses on Sheffield Road. Probably recorded by the same fella.

Remember the night really well. Seem to remember they shut the M62 because of the fog. Could be an urban myth.

Obviously you were not there. It's not a myth.

14k+ bought tickets in advance another estimated 3k paid on day. If you'd been there you'd have drawn the conclusion there were equal, if not more barnsley fans than liverpool fans. We had fans on 3 sides of the ground. Up to half way on both sides and away end. Kop was very sparse. I'm not sure if it's the case. But reputedly. the most visiting fans ever at Anfield.

Portsmouth put in a good show a couple of years earlier 12.5k in a 32k crowd. On a Tuesday night as well.
    Another fact not myth.

We took well above 10k to Enfield. (White hart lane)
An Estimated 14k at Middlesbrough in a 37k crowd.
So reasonable to say a lot more to Anfield against the top side in the country. For years B4 and after.

Seem to recall reading somewhere that 3 specials ,and 250 coaches were part of the "armada" to Anfield.

I was lucky enough to be on one of the "specials", at least we got there in good time. Buses were laid on for us to take us to Anfield. We were so giddy we didn't remember where wed been dropped off so ended up on a service bus back. An interesting journey to say the least!
Love the tale of the bloke running up the steps at the end of the game puffing and panting.
    "How longs left?"
    Bloke int crowd."Last minute mate"
    "Blow f*****g whistle ref!!!"
    Brilliant night.

My old man’s told me loads about this game. He also didn’t get in while late due to the weather & the bad traffic.

I think me my best mate and my brother went on one the supporters coaches...we arrived and in the the ground for 7.45...I'm sure it was put back 15 mins to accommodate the traveling fans.
Thank you soooo much for this ......I literally remember next to nothing about the game but do remember the atmosphere...I was at sixth form at the time and its all anyone could talk about for ages....very very proud of us that night.
Thank you again for putting this on...merry Christmas .

Remember Trevor Aylott's interview in recent years, he talks so positively about that era.
Saying it was the best football of his career, and we had a great unbreakable spine right down the middle of the team.
And he says the great Bob Paisley went out of his way to say how good we were that night at Anfield. Possibly in fact, one of the best teams and supporters to have gone there that season.
    Brilliant memories ehh. :)

Thank goodness i was there from 78 to 83. Seriously was my most momentous period following them!
I was 13 when Clarke came to Oakwell and enjoyed the ride from there on in! And what a ride!!!

Yo Wuzzer lol, I became a fan at roundabout this time (Christmas), at the end of '80. And hey, I was 9 and a half then.
Clarke had gone and Hunter was the man who led us in those next few years. It was my first year as a fan, and that calender year of '81 will never ever be forgotten. :)

In the 80s just one sub allowed Liverpool players could easily play 70 games per season, No resting best players Barnsley could have reached Final if they had avoided lLiverpool. 2 legs in first 3 rounds beat Peterboro 9-2 on aggregate in 2nd round.

I remember listening to local radio in stationary traffic as kickoff time approached, the reporter saying that in view of the numbers of Barnsley fans stuck on the M62 that kickoff should be delayed. Then the announcement that it was delayed by 15 minutes. They also said that they normally didn't cover the games live but made an exception for our benefit and did live commentary.

I also read that it was a record number of away fans at Anfield at the time.

Didn't Liverpool return about 5,000 tickets for the replay?

Ronnie was injured, wasn't he, and couldn't play. It might just have been different, if he had played.

I’d forgotten how close we ran them in the replay too. Couldn’t remember that Liverpool’s second and third goals came so late in the game.
