I used to have a metal detector. My parents got me it from Tandy back in the nineties. Used it a couple of times in the back garden then ended up in the downstairs cupboard. It was a phase I went through. I obsessed about having a pair of binoculars too (which I still have).

We only ever found tin foil sweet wrappers when we had one as kids.

Early 80's, one of my brothers used to go down Oakwell with his detector, and he used to come back with a fair wedge.
Takes it on holiday with him too. Apparently; after a week on the beach he'd almost covered his costs.

I got one last year for a small 'archaeological' type group I am part of. I'm not sure where the thing currently resides but I remember feeling quite 'into it' for a few brief weeks. Very therapeutic.
Permission is always a grey area.

I'd suggest follow my brothers channel on YT. Mark the metal detectorist. Dunno much about detecting myself, but he knows his history of things, and the better places to go

Then get yerself off to Australia and detect for gold. Some of those on tv find some lovely nuggets with no expense of big machinery.
    Easy money.

I had one in the 70's, it worked fine but couldn't differentiate between tin foil and more solid things... I found stacks of old coins but not much of real interest... a friend in South Elmsall was really good at it, he had a room packed full of interesting bits... hundreds of Roman coins, brooches, medallions.. all sorts of things, his technique involved a detector that worked in water, he had a pair of waders and used to do streams and small rivers, in the summer he'd do bigger rivers when the water was low... he had an amazing collection of stuff.
