https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Footballers_from_Barnsley Found the above list of footballers born in Barnsley and it set me wondering who is the most home-grown to have played for the Reds. Anyone know if any of these were born close to Oakwell?
I recall from when he scored against Shaw Lane in the FA Cup for Mansfield, the commentator said Danny Rose grew up just off Shaw Lane.
When I was trying to find former players Glyn Riley's family lived on Grove Street so I presume that's where he was born. The Greenhoff brothers were from Yews Lane in Kendray.
Glyn Riley grew up in Athersley. I went to the same middle school as him, and played in the same school team and Athersley Boys' Club team as Glyn.
I just went back for another look and can see now that Ken Brown is missing. I played in the Broadway U15s with him when he wasn’t in Barnsley Boys duty. Played plenty of games for the Reds
There is no Tommy Taylor listed and he was from Smithies. Mick Booker lives a few doors off so I will ask him where he was born when I see him.
There would be loads of others to add to that list too, especially from older times e.g. FA Cup winner George Utley. The only Reds player to earn a full England cap whilst still a Reds player, so an unforgivable error. Even more unforgivable - no Rimmo !!!??? Also 1967/68 promotion winner Allan Bradbury is conspicuous by his absence, as are Alan Ogley and son Mark. I could go on …
Mick Mccarthy from Worsbrough and went to Our Lady's Catholic Primary school(now Lobwood) as did Steve Agnew I think
I was in the same class as Brian at school (Park Road) off Sheffield Road. When we moved house my mother took me to Burton Road school but they told her I had to go to Eldon St school. This was a stroke of luck; they were football mad at Eldon St and i loved it there. I ended up playing for Eldon St school with Stuart Barrowclough.
I was at Holgate with Jimmy, in the same house (Locke) and played in the same house team. His mother and Dad ran the Morning Star pub in Dobie street. He used to walk to school via park rd, Wood street, Agnes Rd and onto Shaw street. I lived on that route and often walked with him. If he lived in Kendray it must have been either before or after he lived in Dobie street.
