Over the last few seasons it has been clear that 1. If we go for a player and another club bids for him then that's us out of the frame
    2. Any of our better players can leave (despite assurances to the contrary) up to the last minute of the transfer window and despite whether we have a replacement.
    3. We will not spend money on a seasoned player no matter what we need to achieve promotion and fob the fan's off with the usual excuses.
    4. We will leave it to the last minute to bring in players that other more ambitious clubs have overlooked.
That's Barnsley FC for you in recent times....

Is this really the case though?

    1. Not true. Many of the First Team Squad signings we have made in recent years, had interest from other Clubs
    2. Not true. Some players have left, for various reasons. As they do at every other Club. But many have been retained; some despite interest and bids from other Clubs
    3. Not sure what you mean by 'seasoned', but perhaps James Norwood and Michael Sollbaeur fall into that camp. No signing guarantees promotion. Not at our level.
    4. Can you give some examples? We're a Division 3 Club, do you think it's realistic that we should just be able to sign all our targets as soon as the window opens, with no resistance?

Yet the 'more ambitious clubs' gladly take them off at our hands for more than we paid.

Ambitious clubs usually have ambitious owners with money to spend, it looks like we haven’t
    Que a spending spree

Such a funny word ambition. Means different things to different people.

Does ambition just mean rich to you mate? Completely different things. Id rather do it, or try to at least, the proper way. Not do a Wigan, Bolton, Wednesday, Portsmouth etc etc.

Definitely! How many clubs our size have reached for the sun then got their fingers burnt!

Long gone are the days when clubs like Forest were promoted and won the league- money has completely changed the game. Levels of money required now to match any kind of ambition is astronomical...

Seriously, why do you bother with BFC?
Most serious fans know the restrictions we operate under. We don't always like it, but we accept it, because its our team. (I was here in the old 4th Division).
You're not alone, but you are one of the most negative people on this BBS.
Why do you still stick with BFC, when there are so many better options out there?

Whether its allegedly negative or not, surely Pete is allowed to post such thoughts about these owners ?.
And for me, I think some of his points are correct as well.

It's the inference that we're all stupid and/or happy clappers to put up with it.
He's entitled to think that but those of us who recognise reality are allowed our say too. And the comment that that's BFC in recent times is just daft. That's been BFC since 1887. It's not going to change.

Posters should be able to post an opinion without being told either your a " Happy clapper and will stand Egg under't cap" or "Your so negative ya need to go and support somebody else" the beauty of free speech is being able to express an opinion, I find myself often agreeing with the positive posters ( yes I think we'll make top 6)
but also critical of the policy of selling and player trading over maintaining the Team..

    1) If that club is in the Championship, or is willing to pay stupid wages that we (and quite possibly they) can't afford, this is correct.
    2) Isn't that the same for every club in the league, barring Man City and one or two others? And if as the selling club we've let the deal go down to the wire so the buyer pays silly money, surely that's not such a bad thing?
    3) I somewhat agree with you here. Signing Norwood was a great move. In general I like our transfer policy, but one or two more like Norwood or Solbauer would not go amiss. It has to be the right player though. Hendrie, Wilkinson and Thompson were inspired signings. Clayton Blackmore and Kevin Richardson, arguably more talented footballers than those three, were utter pony for us. Geoff Thomas and Steve Chettle were ok, but didn't really live up to expectation.
    4. That's just not true.

Not the way I’d have phrased things but off the field we are still a complete mess.

We have a recruitment strategy that’s scattergun at best which means we have 2841553 centre halves but have to play full backs there because none are good enough.

The ground continues to fall down around us.

The match day experience mostly is about as much fun as being punched in the face repeatedly.

We cannot get basic admin correct meaning we are kicked out of competitions.

We are under investigation from the EFL due to irregularities in our behaviour.

An absolute shitshow however you slice it.

    Managed decline.

So we are not a possible championship team anylonger now then and you are willing to settle for mid table league 1? Because a lot of our supporters don't see it that way.

I've 'bothered' with Barnsley fc as a season ticket holder since 1968 and have put up with us being in the old fourth division back in the 197Os for quite a few years but never thought we would return to those days. But now the way it's going I think the board are willing to forsake ambition of any kind.

This looks a pretty fair summation to me. The 2017 takeover by outsiders with seemingly more financial muscle held out the hope that we would move on from our low-cost selling M.O. But things have not improved. If the owners will not invest, then supporters can not be expected to.

I honestly have no idea how you’ve extrapolated this, from my response. I haven’t said, suggested or even implied any of what you just said.

The sad reality is we are a league 1 club in stature now, & that is exactly where we are, league 1. Unless we find serious investment from somewhere that’s how it will remain, with the odd yo yo between League 1 & the Championship, but to do that we must over achieve, much like Rotherham, equal in stature.

Annoyingly other teams are on an upward trajectory such as Wrexham etc so we’ll find ourselves down the pecking order even further. Unless this new director of football way of thinking can drive us forward with a better recruitment policy.
