Comes across much better in the written interview they just need to keep him away from the microphone.
He does indeed. Some people can articulate their thoughts much better either when writing down what they want to say, or at least having the time to formulate their ideas rather than having to answer on the spot with a microphone shoved in their face. I haven't always been Herbie's biggest fan, but his performances and general attitude on the field have been exemplary since that car crash interview.
Also, third tier players probably don't get the media training that top flight football players get. I remember that Manchester United documentary where they were saying Paul Scholes used to leave as quickly as possible and hide from the press. He then went on to be a pundit on TV! The Herbie interview made him come across as someone who didn't have any passion for playing for us, but like you say, since then, his attitude and contribution has improved a lot. Whether it's because the transfer window was/is looming or not, I don't know. I just hope that if he stays with us, it's because he wants to, and that he plays like someone who wants success for the club, the fans and himself.
He’s only 25. I honestly thought he was nearly 30. But tbh he was asked if he was much closer to sorting his future beyond this season which he said “no” then when asked if talks ongoing he deflected again. He’s had media training. He’s just not good at talking to the media.
Or maybe he's just not interested! Nothing wrong with that - there's plenty of us out there who'd always turn down a televised interview. Not his fault that he doesn't get the choice. I'm a lot more interested in performances on the pitch.
