Gotta be honest and I say I think the onus should be on the home team for things like frozen pitch etc. If they were penalised they may consider investing in equipment/processes to stop this happening.
Saying it was nearly there at 11 and deciding to check again at 1 to give it every chance is one thing. Saying ‘it’s on as it stands’ at 11, but choosing to have a second check two hours later THEN calling it off, is appalling. Be interesting to see what the official response is from the Club
It's not that easy though. It's a massive undertaking to install under soil heating and we know from our own home games that it's rarely effective anyway.
It is I agree and not saying it’s easy but other clubs manage it. It is feasible but clubs choose not to and spend elsewhere which I get. Not something I would introduce overnight either but could be something like you have 5 years to. Grants could also maybe be granted to qualifying clubs. If you take todays game as an example, it sounded touch and go at 11pm if Stevenage were faced with having to refund all travelling supporters they would have been much keener to push to play, whereas at the moment it if the league pay for it there is none.
But teams like Forfar in snowy scotland are still playing but a bit of frost we call it off. If it's snowing I would understand.
The fans who live close by may not have. The officials have to take every opportunity to get the match on. If somebody inspected Oakwell at 11am and called it off and then found out at 1pm it was playable I would be extremely annoyed. I have no issues with the process.
For me if clubs have got under soil then they should be made to inspect the pitch earlier than normal as they there is more chance of a postponement, would at least save fans from travelling on the day
I rarely travel to away matches these days so I certainly wouldn’t risk it during a week when the weather has been so bad, but that’s just me.
We can't blame Collins for this. Before someone does... Referee on the other hand should have thought there was a 90% chance of it going ahead to postpone a decision to 1pm, with a large number of travelling fans.
Future scenario ... Stevenage get promoted to the Championship. You can already hear the cries of anger from away supporters travelling from goodness knows where to a small club with no undersoil heating only to be told at the last minute "it's off". I bet they'd be told to get it sorted pronto. And they would.
I'm as frustrated as anyone having left Leeds on train at 10am but its not Stevenages fault. Undersoil heating is expensive, possibly beneficial about 2-3 times a season and even then it's likely surrounding areas get game called off. I'm sure it's Donny ground they took a conscious decision not to install it for those reasons. It will have cost them a lot today in wasted food etc. Blame the ref and EFL processes which don't force pp decisions before away fans set off but I genuinely don't see if being Stevenages fault tbh.
Didn't we have a game postponed due to the Ponty end stand blocking the sun at that end of pitch, so ground didn't thaw at the same rate and that was with the aid of undersoil heating. Feel for you fans that have made the journey.
