Sunderland have approached Barnsley to sign Callum Styles.

The club want to sign Styles on an initial loan with an obligation to buy him in the summer.

The 23-year-old has scored three times and made two assists in 20 League One appearances so far this season.

 

Can't they just buy him.

 

Try before you buy. If he's Babba send him back.

 

Realistically, how much is Callum Styles worth?

More to the point, how much will Barnsley fc get for him?

4 million? That would be better business that the kitching transfer.

 

Makes no sense to loan him out. We would get no money to replace and we could have the same scenario as Millwall where he's back here if he doesn't impress.

 

Seriously? Which game have you watched him in since he came back from Millwall and thought he was a £4m player. Or even £1m.

It's well reported his release fee is £2m, but we don't stand a prayer of getting that.

I think he’s worth about 500k. While he has some talent he lacks pace and size. Which a lot of top players have in abundance. He’s also lacking a position. He turns 24 at the end of March too so the whole young prospect tag will soon fade. 500k seems fair for a championship squad player who’s played a decent number of games and is fairly versatile.
If we really do think he has potential to exceed that id also insert a 20% sell on clause and a few performance based bonuses if he does perform well and develop further at least we’ll be compensated for that.

 

Realistically, now I think we'd accept 750k ish. If he goes to the Euros and we gamble on him having an impact against Scotland, Germany and Switzerland, we could hit that £2m clause, but that's a big gamble, if he does nowt, we're back to square one with him.

 

I'd tell 'em he's only for sale, not a loan. Millwall shafted us last time.

 

Everyone's making a fundamental error in this thread, and assuming it's true.

 

If it’s an obligation to buy then I can see the sense behind it. There will probably be a loan fee involved, takes him off of our wages and we get a guaranteed fee in the summer. Millwall wanted him in the summer but couldn’t afford the release fee according to a Millwall fan I spoke to, they actually rated him highly and wanted their club to sign him

 

So far, Nixon has had him going to Hull, Birmingham and now Sunderland.

 

As poor as he's been he can do it when it suits, if we get injuries he could be invaluable, stand firm stump up or bog off sunderland trying to have pur pants down and looking at cheap options

 

They know the two million release clause. We'd be daft to do try before you buy again.

 

If it’s an obligation to buy then he’ll move permanently at the end of the loan, regardless of whether they think he’s been good or sh*t. It’s not a try before you buy scenario.

Edit: it’s being reported by a few Sky Sports accounts, so could be accurate than Nixon. Interesting to see if he plays tonight or not.
