Just to reiterate - the police have no say in bail other than to make recommendations.

 

Except to say that once they have charged an arrested person with an offence then they would make a decision as to whether to bail the accused to appear at court or to keep him in custody to be produced at the next available court hearing. The court then takes over and determines any remand/bail application(s) pending trial.

Prior to charge, the Police can release on bail with or without conditions pending further inquiries, but strict time limits apply to how long the suspect can be detained in custody. If they wish to extend this period then they have to apply to a court for a warrant of further detention.

 

Is there an advantage to be gained in that by granting bail he may lead the police to the wanted party?

Very few offences are excluded from getting bail - murder, manslaughter and serious sex offences are the main ones. Unless it could be proven that releasing them would see further offences committed, they were always going to get bail.

I don't think it's "you're a Christian so we'll take you" I think it's an argument that as a Christian they might face religious persecution if they returned. There needs to be a consideration of the religious persecution aspect in any applications, but equally it shouldn't be open to abuse as a loophole. It's a tricky one.
