Barnsley town centre has been awarded a purple flag for the 5th year running. Barnsley is flying the Purple Flag once again (msn.com)
22% increase in footfall, compared to 3% UK average last year. Against a backdrop of COL and interest rates, that's incredible.
Aye but the council only spend money on the town centre, they take backhanders, should spend money on the roads and it’s white elephant! The old 70’s Eastern block concrete was much better!
I'm not from Barnsley but the game before Xmas I parked up early and did 'the bridge' and the shopping bits and a couple of the bars up those little back streets. Barnsley was thriving when I first started visiting late 70s / early 80s. Then like most towns it kind of got stale and I seldom visited. From what I saw in December I think you all should be very proud of a lovely little town centre once more. View from an offcumden, FWIW. x
It's well deserved and a credit to the planners and foresight of the local authority. After all the negative comments from the folk who only pull the council down it's good news for a change. Visitors from other towns seem to like it.
Looks fantastic - gets a lot of negative comments usually from anti-council brigade but it has brought some life back to town. Looks clean, fresh and modern and plenty for people to enjoy. Be proud of it!!
I've always spread the news how great Barnsley is.I started drinking in the town centre in the very early 70's and has continued to do so.For me now the town as gone up another level.Instead of going to Leeds Sheffield etc these people are now to coming to Barnsley for a night out. A few years ago there was one or two BBS's who took great delight in mocking our town.I'd like them to visit now for a weekend and take in the shopping, restaurants bars and everything else this wonderful unique town has to offer.
