RIP. That Gudjon side was formed from offcuts and cast-offs and overperformed mightily. Handyside and Ireland were a solid, no-frills partnership. Condolences to his family
I'll be honest I'd completely forgotten that Handyside even played for us, which is weird as I had a season ticket and went to quite a few away games in the Gudjon era. Remember Craig Ireland. Excellent defender who joined us in very tricky circumstances. Gudjon did an amazing job. Sacking him and appointing Phart was a very poor decision in my opinion.
Jesus that is tragic, I remember him well ,we looked such a big back 3 at the time . We were worried we wouldn't kick off that day due to admim. God above ,taken so young RIP . We should mention it tomorrow hopefully . i do hope there is some tribute to a former player,
RIP Peter. I remember him in the team with Gallimore and Illic at a tough period for the club. Condolences to his family and friends
That team could've got promoted a year earlier if we'd kept Gudjon I reckon. We had a solid defence, Gorre in midfield and some good young strikers up front. I was only 12 at the time though so i've probably got nostalgia memory. We were flirting with promotion though iirc
It's still in no media and not one of his former clubs have done a RIP post on their websites or social media.
RIP Peter. I remember that period fondly as I was school age and was really getting into following us. I remember the doubt as to whether we'd kick off the season and if so, would we even have a team (Clive Wjinhard was on trial I think). We essentially recruited the defence a week or so before the season started and were very very solid. Dean Gorre provided the sparkle. I remember beating Colchester on the opening day at a scorching Oakwell then much fancied Brighton soon after. We won at Saltergate to send us top of the league I believe and then it all went a little pear shaped. Eventually Gudjon got replaced and Hart came in. It seemed the more we added to the squad the worse we got but the at one time or another we had an attack comprising of Nardiello, Boulding, Stallard, Gorre and Betsy and still flattered to deceive. A young Jon Walters came later that season and possibly the best ever nomination for obscure Barnsley players, and Aussie keeper called Daniel Clitnovici. A barmy season really. Paul Warhurst joined us and got sent off against Sheff Wednesday on debut and later on was the infamous 6-1 thumping at Grimsby! There's next to no footage of the season nor the seasons before and afterwards (unless someone knows differently) and a such I suppose it gets forgotten about. Anyway Peter Handyside was will be remembered fondly and did an excellent job for us. RIP indeed.
The Chesterfield away game was brilliant. Real battling performance. If I remember correctly Georgi Hristov scored for Macedonia against England later that day!
He did I believe! I watched it live and very very randomly saw a repeat of that England game last week on You Tube. Great memories.
