He was the highlight of Radio Two afternoons for me until the corporation shamefully ditched him in favour of a vastly inferior Scott Mills. I stopped listening to the station as soon as that happened and very rarely tune into anything on Radio Two now. It's just one long string of prattling nobodies talking over each other and treating broadcasting as one big joke, while not being remotely funny. I'm just amazed that Tony Blackburn hasn't been pensioned off long ago, seeing as he is 81 now. I'm glad about that though because he is a genuine broadcaster and I listen to his Sounds of the Sixties every week, but only on catch up seeing as they shunted him into the 6 am Saturday morning slot. I am genuinely saddened to hear about Steve's passing and I will find his last show tomorrow on the BBC player and listen to him one last time. I loved his afternoon show with The Posse and especially the Ask Elvis slot. That was pure comedy genius. Bit by bit the wall of my life is being dismantled. Another sad day.....
RIP, mortality hits home when more n more of your youth vanishes......and I ain't 60 yet.....someone keep Paul Weller safe, he's only 10 years older than me.
Another part of childhood gone. Was definitely the highlight of Radio 1 back in the 80s. Think it got a bit tired when he moved to Radio 2, and they were still churning out “Factoids”. That said he was a gifted bloke and I have many happy memories coming home from school/ college and listening to his show. RIP . :-(
I liked it when he made some cheeky sarcastic comments on Totp2. Especially about the naff and cheesy songs.
I love Tony Blackburn too, but sorry, SOT60s is a poor shadow of the show it was when Brian Matthews presented it.
Really sad news what a legend. He’ll be doing some serious jockin in heaven! He’s the first dj I ever remember. My grandma and grandad would have Love Songs on every Sunday morning when we used to stay over.
I wouldn't say a poor shadow - just different and always entertaining. I love the corny jokes and the little stories he tells about the artists and their songs. He's a link to my childhood, delivering papers listening to him in the R1 breakfast slot.
He's a good presenter is Mills. He took a lot of unwarranted stick when he took over. It wasn't him who got shut of Steve. He did a classy tweet today.
Was the soundtrack of my journeys home from school in the 80s and good listening when working in more recent times. Sid the Manager had me in stitches.
