36 years ago today we had our highest ever attendance. Played Stoke City in front of an Oakwell crowd of 40.255.
Not 36 years ago BMW. It was in 1936 in the FA Cup 5th round. We won 2-1 but I didn't realise until recently that we started fast and scored after just 30 seconds and whilst they also equalised early after 6 minutes, our top scorer Ernest Hine put us 2-1 up before HT and that was the final score. Maybe Neill could tell the players about the benefits of playing well right from kick off!
I think that was the official attendance released. But was much bigger in reality. God knows how many climbed over the brewery stand wall lol.
I thought it was the second, wasn't Leicester in a cup game thought to be the highest but it was unofficial?
I’ve been going since 1973 and highest attendance in that time was against Man City in 1981, around 35000 I think.
I wonder if anyone still with us was amongst the 40,255 in 1936? Maybe Harold Yeardley who was a special guest at Oakwell last Saturday? Anyone old timers on here?
