As a result of this I've now stopped saying "good boy" to my 14 year old dog, just to be on the safe side.

You never know who might be listening in.

It’s a bit weird though, no? It’s infantilising you.

Well let's hope he's of a certain age otherwise some soft souls will take offence.

I just found it funny, and in a strange way a little endearing. I know her, and it was clear from her tone and body language that it was just a joke. And anyway, at 68 any hint that I may be younger than I am is always welcome!

Bitch? Don't ever even whisper that word. Your dog's a female of the species.

You might get a song out of that observation.

    A pretty dire one

Maybe that’s the difference, though? You know she’s saying it as a joke. The reporter was not happy with her line of questioning and definitely wasn’t playfully joking with someone he knows well.

Let's be honest Helen. Good lass wouldn't go down well with the PC brigade either. People are too eager to take offence when none is there. Even worse. On behalf of those not offended."love" is used commonly in the north by almost everyone regardless of gender. Not in the south so much. As it's seen as too forward. No it's not, it's an expression some may not like because of the connotation some perceive. Not the actual expression meant.

He didn’t need to call her good anything, it was patronising just because he was annoyed that she wanted to ask him about a topic he brought up. If he did really feel the need to say good anything then following it up with girl was then the most belittling choice.

I think you're spot on. I don't think for a moment she would have said it to a "normal" customer. Funnily enough, I got into the habit of saying "good girl", instead of "thank you", to her when she brought me a drink. It was just good natured banter between mates, despite the massive age difference. Having said all that, I agree that Brendan Rodgers was out of order, especially when being recorded. I don't think he'll say it again!

He'may well say good lad though. Are there any male groups about that would take offense at that?

The difference is. Most would respect that. Not someone offended on the behalf of the unoffended.

Good lad in that context would still have been him being a patronising little ****. And good boy to a grown ass man doing his job would have been even worse.

But apparently she did not take offence. Take it up with her.

20 years ago we were doing construction work for John Lewis. I was reprimanded by the 'chairperson' for calling her 'love'. It got worse because she asked us to reannotate manholes on the drawings as person holes.

Even if he would have been patronising to a bloke, 99% of blokes would just get on with it. By all accounts the lady reporter wasn’t even offended, so why has it made headlines?, easy to answer to really, the feminist group called it out when really there was no need.
