Town End Roundabout

I can't see how this could possibly go wrong. Honest!

They’ve been working on exactly the same for months in Sheffield at West Bar roundabout. It’s barmy and is causing great disruption. Cycle lanes expanded, and knock on works on feeder roads to the roundabout - just seems massive overkill for the number of cyclists that actually use those roads.

 

The whole point is to improve access for cyclists to increase numbers cycling. As it is at the moment there are no cycle friendly routes into and through the town centre. Investment in Park and Ride west of the M1 and pedestrianising the town centre would also help

 

For the past year I've used that roundabout 5 days a week and my office overlooks it. The number of cyclists I've seen on it could be counted on one hand.

 

I think that backs up my point!!

 

I think our terrain is the biggest factor when determining cycling numbers around Barnsley.

 

Well the shutting of hard shoulders on motorways worked really well and didn't result in any accidents or deaths, did it, so this scheme looks an absolute winner.
Three million quid well spent methinks.
By the way "snagpoint" is a brilliant word. I wonder how much it cost the council to dream that one up?

 

That whole area is just a mess now, not sure when's it going to end!?!? I am driving near there tonight, dreading it.

 

Sheffield has better-but not great- cycling infrastructure than Barnsley and more cyclists despite their much hillier terrain. E bikes are on the increase which is a help. Traffic, poor road surfaces and lack of cycle infrastructure are the main barriers. A Dutch roundabout on its own without improvements into and out of it will be a waste of money

 

I honestly can't think of a less compatable roundabout than the West Bar one for that type of design. Brook Hill maybe, but otherwise I'm struggling.

 

I was told that the use of the word "snagpoint" was free, but feasibility study into its use cost around £20k.

 

Can you see how the arrows are incorrect for the lanes? When you come from KFC the left hand lane as a left arrow to go onto West Way but it's lined up with the lane to go up Racecommon Road, it's the same on Shambles Street and Dodworth Rd

 

I've lived partially in Germany for the last 25 years. Cyclists and pedestrians have always had priority at roundabouts and junctions there, as in most other European countries. It's the norm over there and works very well, motorists are used to it and automatically slow down or stop when necessary. To be honest I'm surprised that drivers in the UK have difficulty with it, it seems perfectly simple to me.

But the idea is to get more cyclists and take more motor vehicles off the roads.

 

I have no objection to cyclists as long as they follow the rules of the road

 

I live near the town end and there’s not usually much trouble getting across the road. I rarely need to press the button to cross. Only really on Summer Lane, cos you can’t see who’gonna come tearing round the corner from Dodworth Road.

I think a more pressing road safety task for the council would be to sort a way to block off the roads on the Oakwell side of the new bridge for 10-15 minutes after matches. I’m surprised nobody’s been seriously hurt.

I don't know much about this particular issue tbf, but if you put cycle lanes and facilities into a project a significant amount of Govt money becomes available to the council. Where I live there's a dual carriageway that needs a lot of money spending on it (for various reasons), if it gets done with cycle lanes the Govt will put several million in.
