It's a strange one as it's seems there maybe more appointments yet.

Flatman will be the one overseeing the day to day

    Sormaz in charge of recruitment

Hough will be the administrator making sure all the t's are crossed and the i's dotted

I've read it as three distinct areas.

    1. Sporting success - yer man Sormaz, includes all things football
    2. Business/commercial success - Flatman
    3. Operational efficiency & compliance etc (the sexy stuff) - Hough

All three will no doubt have to work together, but I've read it as they have distinct accountabilities and *I think* all reporting up to the board directly.

I guess the Head of Football Operation and Club Secretary role will combine some/all of the following:

    Head of Football Operations
The Head of Football Operations is primarily involved in the management and strategic aspects of the football side of the club. Their responsibilities typically include:

    1. Player Recruitment and Management: Overseeing the recruitment process, including scouting, signing, and managing players. This often involves coordinating with the manager and scouts, negotiating contracts, and ensuring compliance with league regulations.

    2. Team Performance: Working closely with the coaching staff to monitor and improve team performance. This can include implementing strategies, technology, and systems to enhance player development and performance analysis.

    3. Budgeting and Financial Management: Managing the football department's budget, including player salaries, transfer fees, and other related expenses, in line with the club's financial strategy.

    4. Liaison with Coaching Staff: Acting as a bridge between the coaching staff and the club's upper management, ensuring that the coaches' needs and strategies align with the club's objectives.

    5. Compliance with Regulations: Ensuring that the club adheres to all league and association rules, particularly those relating to player registrations, transfers, and financial fair play.
    Club Secretary
The Club Secretary's role is more administrative but equally vital. Their responsibilities include:

    1. Fixture Management: Organizing fixtures, including match scheduling, venue arrangements, and coordination with league officials and opposing teams.

    2. Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring compliance with league and association regulations, which involves handling player registrations, transfers, contract management, and ensuring all documentation is accurately maintained and submitted.

    3. Liaison with Governing Bodies: Acting as the primary point of contact between the club and football governing bodies, like the Football Association (FA) and EFL (English Football League).

    4. Administrative Duties: Handling day-to-day administrative tasks, such as managing correspondence, organizing meetings, and maintaining club records.

    5. Event Management: Assisting in organizing club events, including match days, which involves coordination with various departments like marketing, security, and hospitality.
When it comes to CEO vs Sporting Director:

In a League One football club, or any professional football club, the roles of the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) and the Sporting Director (or Director of Football) are distinct but integral to the operation and success of the club. Their responsibilities and focus areas differ significantly:

    CEO (Chief Executive Officer)
    1. Overall Club Management: The CEO is responsible for the entire management of the football club. This includes business operations, financial management, marketing, sponsorships, and other non-football-related activities.

    2. Financial Oversight: They oversee the club's finances, ensuring financial stability and growth. This includes managing budgets, revenue streams, and expenditure.

    3. Strategic Planning: The CEO is pivotal in developing and implementing the club's long-term strategic plans. This encompasses business development and exploring new opportunities for the club's growth.

    4. Stakeholder Management: Managing relationships with key stakeholders such as the club's owners, board of directors, investors, sponsors, and the broader community.

    5. Compliance and Regulation: Ensuring the club adheres to the legal and regulatory requirements of the league and other governing bodies.

    6. Representing the Club: The CEO often acts as the face of the club in the business and sporting world, representing the club in meetings, conferences, and media appearances.
    Sporting Director (Director of Football)
    1. Football Operations Oversight: The Sporting Director is primarily concerned with the footballing aspects of the club. This includes the development and implementation of a footballing philosophy and strategy.

    2. Player Recruitment and Scouting: They oversee player recruitment, scouting, and transfer negotiations. This role often involves working closely with the head coach to identify and acquire players that fit the team's style and needs.

    3. Youth Development: Managing the club’s youth development programs, ensuring a pipeline of talent for the first team.

    4. Coaching and Performance: While they don't directly manage the team, the Sporting Director often has a say in the appointment of coaching staff and may oversee their performance.

    5. Long-term Football Strategy: Developing a long-term vision for the football side of the club, which includes performance goals, playing style, and club culture.

    6. Liaison Between Coaching Staff and Board: Acting as a bridge between the football operations (coaches, players) and the club’s higher management and board.
Differences Between CEO and Sporting Director
    • Focus Area: The CEO focuses on the overall business and administrative aspects of the club, while the Sporting Director is dedicated to the footballing side.
    • Decision-Making: The CEO deals with decisions impacting the club's business and financial health. In contrast, the Sporting Director makes decisions regarding player acquisitions, coaching staff, and football strategy.
    • Interaction with the Team: The Sporting Director is more closely involved with the team and coaching staff, whereas the CEO's interaction is more on the business and operational side.
    • Strategic vs. Tactical: The CEO is more involved in strategic, long-term planning for the club as a whole, while the Sporting Director deals with the tactical, day-to-day aspects of running the football team.

Can’t you summarise that into a nice RACI for us who are hard of reading? ;)

I think, and always have thought, that the CEO role at BFC was always too much for one person to effectively do any role properly.

Obviously it was more for cost efficiency than anything - but it also highlights how much of a job previous CEOs had, and how held back they might have been due to simple time constraints.

These new roles should help ensure tasks are carried out better and more efficiently, but I also think it’ll help the club grow further off the field, which will positively impact on the field too. It also brings us more into line with modern day management of clubs.

Exciting times really - I don’t expect big changes, but I think we’ll become more organised and able to compete financially better as a club.

Fair play to the board backing this idea financially too at League 1 level.

Be interesting if we've in essence got a management / 'C Suite' of the three roles/people you mention reporting up to the board or whether the CEO is the main / focal point.

    Nice one Gally!
Beautifully presented with clarity and panache!
I'd like to see an org chart. I'm thinking that Ann and Mladen will report into Jon and Jon into the Board?
Could be wrong but this would seem sensible.

    Awesome.

I was going to have a stab later but I've been in workshops all morning documenting User Stories for developers with too much time on their hands - oooh the irony ;)
