Taken from FB page. Don’t know date of photo was taken, but it looks a grand building. No doubt it fell into disrepair and eventually demolished. Someone said on comments that Leslie Frances Hair Salon was upload_2024-3-14_15-28-37.png

No, but I have seen it in old pics of Barnsley on you tube - it’s the Imperial Hotel that stood at side of Corner Pin in Peel Square

Looks like it’s gone back to the original. Shame they couldn’t keep the Imperial. Looks like 1905 on the building

We’ve talked about this int pub many a time. Unfortunately the architectural fashion of the late 60s early 70s was the concrete high rises/jungles. You also have to apportion blame to those that were responsible for the upkeep of the buildings as well. Private landlords etc

We would have missed out on Casa Disco though, if it hadn't been demolished...

Imagine how much pigeon 5hit there would be on it if it was still there.
Look above ground floor level and most old town centre buildings are neglected.

Agreed but I wonder if it was the council or the building owner who ripped it down

Yeah, that’s the point I was making. Perhaps the council ultimately made the decision to flatten it, but previous owners or whoever, ‘run it down’

Only one that looks any good is the Santander building. Think it's Santander anyway. Looks like at some point it was cleaned up properly which everywhere else needs doing too. Would really make a big difference

Would also be good to encourage more town centre shops to have more traditional looking signage. Classy always wins

Does anyone know how long it was operating as a hotel? Can't have been very long with it only being constructed in 1905.

I don't like the brutalist architecture there now, but can't say I'm much of a fan of the faux gothic of the hotel.

Have you seen the old ones that have been exposed on Eldon Street now then scaffolding is down?

No I haven't, the scaffolding was still up last I saw. Are they looking good? I'll pop into town tomorrow and check them out

Yes, but it's not the landlords who've paid for it.

Is it? I've always assumed it's one off the old buildings

1980's or early 90's I think. And the owners of the building to the right of it painted it blue without planing permission, then had to pay for it sand blasting back to the original stonework.
