Anyone else sick of seeing this? Today we were against a very poor side and continued with this tactic. We have zero ability to hit on the break. The ball comes straight back in for another pop if we clear. A lot of the time 0/11 get a head on the ball. its infuriating. We should have macatee on the half way line and connel just past the d. if we do this they have to take some men from the box AND if we break we have an outlet. Plus we have someone to look to pick up a clearance. And one nore thing. When we win a throw the players instinctively turn to throw it back into defence the majority of the time. 2 things there that piss me off watching us. We could then go onto cookie cutter attacks and patterns of play. Just gets boring and predictable. Sure collins would defend these shenanigans with ‘the data shows us this works’. Well the data doesnt look forward and what you need from a game like today so thats where a change in the above could have mixed it up. Reight thats off mi chest now. Anyone agree or just me?
Someone asked Collins this on radio sheffield a few weeks ago mate he said there’s some stats on it and the stats are with him.
Didnt hear it bud. But looks like im right with the last bit then about data and stats yadda yadda. But this proves a point. Hes incapable of realising or trying an alternative when we need a change of tact.
If we played v 11 14 year olds or the womens team would he still fetch all 11 back? Probably cos ‘spreadsheet sez thats how u defend a corner’. I also wonder if these stats consider what happens in the phas of play following a corner if we clear? Cos we dont half put ourselves under pressure and also miss out on chances to attack on the break.
I recall an international i think where the defending team put 3 players on the half way line when defending a corner. Might have been denmark. The attacking team had to take players out of the attack to cover back in defence.
Been saying the same for years about defending corners. If the game's all about stats now we might as well all play FIFA. Whatever happened to common sense and using yer nous? I thought thats what managers were for.
It's the modern way like playing out from the back, keepers having to play like central midfielder along with centre halfs playing there. Love the way Pep and Klopp play but that's with the players at their disposal why almost league 1 sides try to play that way is beyond me.
Posted the same rant on the formations thread. we won the ball in our box 3 times only for the player coming out with the ball having nobody to pass to..hope Collins reads this forum...
I noticed yesterday that Cheltenham, apart from a couple of occasions, always left at least one man up front when we had a corner or set-piece.
I agree it's bizarre, but everyone does it - even Pep and Klopp. So there must be some analytics that back it up or they wouldn't.
totally agree, football's not played on paper its played on grass. I can certainly see in some situations you'd want 11 defending a corner, 0-0 against Cheltenham with the chances of automatic promotion slipping away isn't one of them IMHO. Horses for courses.
Same pattern over and over. Predictable and becomes very boring. you head to another brand when you want some variety or stop buying em. If the flavour is amazing and results in the outcome you want more often than not then you might keep buying them but ours are bland and half of them broken anyway and leave you wanting and needing something else.
this ain't a new thing we've done it for years.. it's like not having player on the posts on corners. it seems Collins plays the zonal marking system on corners which I'm sure they must be stats like said above regards this.
Been saying it for ages, even in the past when previous managers have done it. Leave a couple of players up towards halfway, opponents have to leave 3 players up with them to cover.
