Fall to lowest level for some time, Standing charges increase yet again 83% increase since 2019.
That's roughly £400 per year if you never used a KWH of energy, they still know how to coin it in for people cutting back on energy use.

Because I'm a relatively low user of electricity, the huge increase in my daily standing charge ( 28% ) more or less wipes out the decrease in the unit price (14%). Talk about giving with one hand and taking it away with the other!

Although my rate has gone down from 27.19p/kWh to 24.09p/kWh, the standing Charge has gone up from 57.96p/day to 74.62p/day!

Slightly off topic, but I had an email from Vodafone last week informing me that my mobile phone bill is going up. They've said that the price increase is going up in line with the rate of inflation to cover the increased cost of everything, PLUS an extra 3.5%ish. I'd be interested to see how much companies like these have managed to increase their profits during this period.

I can't remember which company it was, but heard a news story on the radio a few weeks ago of a company making redundancies because their PROFITs had fallen by 8% in the last year. They weren't making a loss, they just weren't making as much profit.

That's a common tactic - especially with public listed companies. IIRC Meta (Facebook) sacked a load of people so that they could run a share buy back. The Stock Market like to see companies doing something to improve profits - even if its the wrong thing for the company.

Have you thought of going on sim only deal I would guess and apologies if I'm wrong but would think your not of age that the latest phone really matters to you. Some great deals that way use your old phone or just buy a cheaper new phone. When I looked into it said people over estimate the amount data they really need so you probably don't need as much as you think but if your are a heavy user I think you can get unlimited everything between £15-£20 just a thought.

Me too Archy, would love to see some of the profits by these companies, whatever would they spin if it wasn't for Covid, Ukraine and inflation.
    All aboard the profit bandwagon

Ridiculously manufactured just at a time when people start switching off lights and using less energy, just as last years increases where beautifully timed for Jack Frost.

I will be once my contract runs out. I generally get a new phone every 4 or so years, around £25-£30pm for the first 2, then do sim only until I need a new phone. I got what seemed like a really good deal on this one at the time, but two price hikes later, and I'm paying over the odds again.

I have a unit for work that is pretty much used for storage, my bill on average has been £3 a month for the electric & £29 standing charge!
We have seriously considered looking into having the electric cut off and having a diesel generator instead.

I pegged my payments last August thinking prices would only go one way. Really not sure if I’m a winner but I certainly feel no better off.

Stick with Martin Lewis although I sometimes think that he doesn’t really understand the standing and unit charges and capped thingy’s !
I just look at what the bill says in pounds, shillings and pence….

I'm gonna have a look at Smarty mobile when my O2 contract ends. Look like good deals.

Maybe shop around a bit more as to your provider. Some companies (i.e Tesco) offer a fixed price for the length of your contract, so no annual price rises. Think Asda might be the same also. Check which mobile service they piggy back off if you have a need to use a particular network.

Don't let Stephen Dawson know you're into pegging, he'll be up there in his kilt before you can say Jack Robinson

That's been the case for a while, definitely pre-covid. Especially prevalent in telecoms, O2 & BT certainly. What really pisses me off is they use RPI to offset increased costs but won't be giving staff pay increases in line with inflation.

Yeah, I will be doing once my deal is up. As I say, I got a pretty good deal at the time for what was a good spec phone, though now I'm paying considerably more than I was when I first took it out. It was the first time I'd switched providers in years.
