Because the only one who values Callum Styles as highly as we'd like him to be valued, is Callum Styles unfortunately.
The level of character assassination in this thread & on the Sunderland forum is terrible but not really surprising. Some of it's just plain ignorance, especially the bit about him being a Division 1 player when he's made 120+ championship appearances & he's proven capable at that level. His international career had a big influence on him not wanting to drop down again & the Millwall deal left the door open had we won the playoff final. Back to the OP, the Sunderland team is in complete disarray & there's no way Callum can be a scapegoat, especially if they really are stupid enough to play him as a left back!
For what its worth I think the club have done their best with Styles. I also think Styles isn't crap like some people say but then neither is he very good. He's an 'ok' player and we've had better and worse in the past. We need to move beyond Styles as a club if we're going to improve and its down to recruitment and retention strategy going forward.

I'm pretty sure we'd let him go on a free and call it 'undisclosed', he doesn't want to be here, just needs everyone to cut their losses now and move on.
He seems to have done well in his last game for them. If he’s up to speed and carries on to the end of the season then he may get a contract from them. I’m not sure I’d put much stock in a Football League World report.
Imho ....I like styles, I think he is decent, tidy player. That said he has done himself no favours of late. Millwall obviously didn't fancy him for the price and it looks like he's not pulling up trees at Sunderland so far. I get that he didn't fully apply himself for us, as he probably had his agent working double time to get him a deal elsewhere. A shame as we never saw how good he could have been for us. We have obviously applied a fee that doesn't match what others are prepared to pay. I would love to see him stay as our regular left wing back next season but I believe he will be off....I just hope we get a decent fee for him but based on his form of late that will have reduced accordingly.
I think he’s joined them permanently already. It does seem bizarre that it was announced as a 4 1/2 year deal then changed to a loan. Fingers crossed anyway.
My guess is that with his appendix issue he couldn't pass a medical, no medical, no insurance, so they had to change it to a loan.
If he returns to us, he'll do so with 12 months of his contract remaining as a current international who will have likely played a role in the European Championships over the summer. If that doesn't allow us to maximise our return for him then I'd seriously question what the new Sporting Director would be doing in his role. Arguably, the Euros gives us a chance to get a better price for him than whatever has been agreed within Sunderland's option, should they decline it.
Agree, we're relying on him doing something miraculous at the Euros, as everywhere he goes, they have a look and decide he's not good enough. As I said earlier, it's unfortunate that he still believes he's too good for us.
At some point he will have to start turning up in domestic games to be able to maximise any return on him.
Strange as it was said Millwall wanted him but either couldn’t afford or were unwilling to pay the asking price. He may not be pulling any trees up at Sunderland, but they are in disarray at the moment, so unfair to blame Styles for that. There is a decent Championship player in there, he certainly has the ability. Seems to me he needs to get his head straight and the rest will follow.
Correct - Millwall wanted him, but weren’t keen on the price. Think they would have bought him eventually, but their Chairman died the same summer didn’t he, so that put Millwall onto a cautious summer.
Doesn't really mean a lot does it, lots of clubs may want him for peanuts. Their ex chairman's son immediately took over and vowed to continue bankrolling them even more if necessary, so that doesn't stack up.
By far his most effective time for us was when playing wing-back, why would anyone play him elsewhere (covering for injuries notwithstanding)?
A decent championship player that we only saw under val at wing back. Hope he does well and gets the move he's after. Millwall didn't want to pay the 2million release fee. And no other championship club did.
