I imagine this is to do with season ticket sales as much as performances. Either way absolutely batshit timing. At this point he gets the rest of the season surely.

No way of proving it, but I dare say if we go one down on Saturday, it'll be less toxic than if Collins was stood there too. Like I say, no way to prove that, but it seems logical that that would be the case.

I'm also delighted,it's nothing personal but the decline has been gargantuan.Hopefully the players will respond to Martin and we go into the Northampton game with a complete reset.Does anyone know if Stead is staying cos if not I'd like Nicky Eaden to be his number two.

Feel bad for the man- he seems to have integrity- and for the hand he's been played in the role. But we've been in consistent relegation form for a quarter of a season and it's not a knee-jerk decision. Our season was ending on that trajectory, likely on Saturday in a tense and often openly hostile Oakwell. The football lacks any sense of coherent identity, leaders in attitude or performance on the pitch are all shadows of their former selves (except McAtee). Many fans are in open revolt, moderate people on here saying they aren't renewing. I said it on another thread but why wait for the inevitable? Playoff chances don't come around all that often and it looks like being harder next year with the teams coming in, and our exodus of out of contract players. At least we have a shot and a chance for positivity in the unknown now with a bloke who lives and loves Barnsley. I'm pleased.

It's not a win/win at all. They've already saddled the club with a squad barely fit for league 2 with the most appalling recruitment in the last few transfer windows that I've ever known in my time watching the club. The manager has somehow got the non-league standard of player they have signed into a playoff spot in League 1. If we drop out of that on Saturday after they've sacked him then it's crystal clear where the fault lies. They've opened themselves up to that and the entire football community of England will be laughing at us if that happens as it will be universally recognised that sacking a manager who has his team in the play offs with one game to go is idiotic.

Also worth mentioning that "Martin Devaney will step up the interim period" needs proof-reading. Before Supertyke mentions it.

    What utterly bizarre timing.

That said, i hope whoever is behind the shocking recruitment this season is also on their way too.

Lol, good one. It's the one thing you can rely on to be constant. That role doesn't do accountability.

The only problem is that whoever is in charge of this lot we are stuck with the same set of poor defenders so unless Devaney suddenly decides to change system i honestly can’t see much changing in the short term.

I took it he was taking the next game- does this not mean that do we think?

Reading the statement it looks like the Board took the decision. "Collins was appointed last summer and despite several positive spells throughout the season, recent results have left the board of directors feeling that a change is needed." "However, with a crucial season conclusion ahead of us, we feel that now is the right time to make a change."

Maybe Cole, Kane, Williams and Cadden have all said they'll sign new contracts so long as he aint still here?

The club has totally lost the plot unless it has Warnock in the building already. If not it's a ridiculous decision. How can no manager be better than having one in the build up to the biggest game of the season?

Feel for the bloke I really do. The timing is a massive kick in the teeth for him. Having nobody is better than you mate. Disgrace.

Except for 2 - and still likely 3 - of the last 4 seasons...

Also this part of the statement: "We will update supporters in the coming days." Are we going to do a Rotherham and appoint quickly?
