Not much info available now that the leasing has switched to Barker Proudlove. It was much easier to find out info when the council got regular leasing updates. Other than the dental practice that’s opening in the unit opposite The Fragrance Shop, I haven’t heard a thing.
Looks to me that Barker Proudlove are doing zero in pushing the glassworks forward, could be wrong but the inactivity speaks volumes
Cheers. I do know that, nationally, there are several franchisees who have multiple branches. As you say, it suits both parties as on many occasions they have a previous business relationship
Should BMBC really be approving a third McDonalds, two of which are basically across the road from each other?
BMBC won't allow one in the town centre due to antisocial behaviour worries, they've turned down a few fast food outlets in the new square. They also won't allow bars that don't sell food to purchase a unit in the square.
TBF The Glassworks is 88% let. Even Meadowhall has empty units. The remaining retail units are quite small and will only attract certain retailers. The bigger concern for me is that they’ve got two large leisure units empty (one of which was under offer and that fell through) and the empty restaurant unit next to The Salt House and Nando’s stands out like a sore thumb so I’d prefer to see something in those over the empty smaller shops. Clarks is opening in the old Optical Express - I don’t recall Barnsley ever having a proper Clarks shop (unless I’m mistaken?) - obviously discounting AJ Sims.
3rd? Birdwell, Cortonwood, Stairfoot and Old Mill Lane make this the 5th in Barnsley. And I'm not sure if the Tankersley one is Barnsley or Sheffield.
I've lived here 20+ years and today I learned that Cortonwood comes under Rotherham council. The entire shopping area has a S73 postcode and I was convinced it was under Barnsley!
Yeah it’s a strange one really. It’s officially Rotherham but has an S73 Postcode so mail goes via Wombwell Delivery Office rather than Manvers (S63). It’s technically within the Brampton Bierlow parish. All the business rates go to Rotherham Council, but the majority of stores label themselves as Barnsley because Barnsley is the post town in the address.
I think there was a Clarks on market street in the early 80s, I seem to recall going in as a kid and using the foot measuring machine thing they had when mam took me for some new shoes.
Was it definitely Clarks? We always called AJ Sims on Eldon Street “Clarks” because they sold Clarks shoes and it had a big Clarks sign outside. It had the measuring machine that tickled your feet.
Yeah I meant town centre rather than wider Barnsley area. Was including Asda, New Street and this new one.
I seem to recall that Morrisons and Morrisons petrol station label themselves differently. One Barnsley, one Rotherham. Due to the fact that one opened before the other and before anyone realised it was the wrong town.
To make it even more confusing your GP is likely be part of Swyft and your hospital Barnsley. My missis does community nursing and she says it’s a bun fight who is responsible for who
