I read that at the time on Facebook & have never read as much ******** in all my life. This idea that you can just play a high press is ridiculous. You have to have pace at the back & aerially dominant players to play it. The perfect example is Dejan Lovren. Top drawer centre back for Croatia, nearly always looks world class for them. He couldn’t play in Klopp’s high press because he doesn’t have the attributes. How can you play a high press, high speed game as he describes it with our current players? Nearly every team we come up against have bigger & faster players. This isn’t Stendel’s side with pace & power all through it or Duff’s with as dominant of a back 3 as you’ll see at this level. It’s just a lazy post. As for the coming together under Ismeal. Wasn’t that a complete fluke? The board didn’t even want to play direct football did they? Wasn’t the summer after the one where they moaned that we didn’t get any offers for our players? ‘The current squad is top 2 standard’ is just ridiculous. It’s far weaker than last year.
The intention was to play 4-4-2 with Moore & Woodrow up top but I think we probably played more games 4-5-1 or certainly a similar amount as Woodrow took forever to play when he first joined & then Moore had his bad head injury in the second half of the season. Dougall played when we played 4-5-1 with Mowatt & McGeehan & tended to drop out if Moore & Woodrow were both fit. Potts on the right until January when he left & Brown took over & on the left was Thiam.
I'm fairly certain Stendel always had 4 at the back also, did he throw away the blueprint or never get the memo?
A current one? Yes. Not one who’s since had success with us & been sacked prematurely at a championship club. ‘Do you want to come back on less money than before? The defence is far weaker & we’re losing half the team in the summer with little money for replacements’ I can’t see him entertaining coming back.
Another thing aswell is, our midfield 3 are technically good but certainly aren’t the quickest. They look so much better off the ball when our defence is physically and aerially dominant enough to push up the half way line. As the centre backs are so much poorer this season and often have to drop back this puts so much more demand on the centre mids, and usually we just get overran down the centre of the pitch which has happened time and time again this season and which is why we’ve conceded so many goals, especially at home where were the onus is on us to dominate. Our whole philosophy imo is dictated by the quality of our centre backs, with good ones the majority of the game is played in our own half, bad ones and teams can hit it long and the pitch is wide open for us to be counter attacked.
No guarantees in football but surely a punt on Wellens makes lots more sense than this Thalhammer guy.
What’s the credentials or credibility for this Thalhammer guy to make the board think he’s the best choice, if it is to be him?. I’d much rather prefer someone who’s already coaching in one of the leagues over here tbh.
Isn’t that why they recruited Collins ? Surely it wasn’t to play possession based football. It would also actually help if they recruited players to match the preferred playing style. The players we have at present certainly aren’t up to the task.
There's not a chance this squad can currently play this style, seen nothing to suggest they carry the stamina either, unless of course they are prepared to completely overhaul the squad. It beggers belief sometimes, they really need to just sit down and think things through first, like are the players to play this available to bring in would be a place to start
This of the last 4 or 5 only Duff had worked over here, so why we would want another Collins, Asbagi, Schopp or even Morais( yes I know he was a No2).
